The Bismarck Representatives leaned on its strength to get through Tuesday's opening round of the Senior Babe Ruth Class A West Region baseball tournament at Jack Brown Stadium.

The Reps' starting pitcher Preston Bartsch blanked tournament eighth seed Mandan, firing five strikeouts in a 10-0, five-inning shutout of the A's. Bismarck moves on to state-qualifying play Wednesday facing the Minot Metros at 5 p.m.

"I just knew if I went out there and threw strikes my defense will be there to make plays for me," said Bartsch, who will be a junior in the fall at Bismarck St. Mary's Central High School.

Bartsch, allowing just three hits, also got things done at the plate, slapping a two-run single off the third-base chalk and into left field to give the Reps an early 2-0 lead in the second inning. Bismarck broke the game open with a six-run third.

The Reps turned a pair of double plays behind their starting pitcher, who faced the minimum three times before getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the final fifth frame. Mandan's Seth Arenz flew out to right to record the game's final out.

"I thought the whole day started for us with (Bartsch) on the bump," said Bismarck Reps coach Troy Olson. "He started out well the first few innings, throwing a lot of strikes and our 'D' played well enough."

The Reps' six-run third came courtesy of three hits, two Mandan errors and two walks. Bismarck sent 11 batters to the plate and chased Mandan starter Brayden Bunnell off the mound with the bases loaded after 2 2/3 innings pitched.

"It was obviously nice to get a little help, but we also had some big at-bats mixed in there, a couple nice bunts," Olson said. "I tell the guys you gotta get on base before you can score, so that's the most important thing."

Bismarck right fielder Joe LaDuke batted 3-for-3 with three singles, a run scored and a run driven in. Mandan left five runners on base. The Reps stranded seven.

The Reps earned the tournament's No. 1 seed after rolling to a 15-1 conference record. The team's lone loss came at the hands of the Bismarck Capitals 5-4 in the team's final conference doubleheader of the regular season.

"We have a lot of depth on the mound, that's where it starts for us and our defense is usually pretty good," Olson said. "Hitting this year has come and gone. Kinda like everybody else, it just needs to be there at the right time."

The Reps will look to keep things rolling Wednesday.

"We just gotta go keep hitting the ball and making good plays," Bartsch said. "Just playing our game of baseball."

The Metros defeated the Bismarck Senators 10-8 in Game 2. The Senators will play Mandan on Wednesday at noon in loser-out play.

Minot battled back from a 5-2 deficit, scoring four times in the fourth and three more in the fifth. Metros catcher Jayden Speraw batted 3-for-4, while Jonas Bubach and Eli Nissen each drove in a pair.

The Senators' Troy Kuball drove in two on a 1-for-2 afternoon, stroking an RBI triple in the fourth. Brett Martin shouldered the loss on the mound but also drove in a pair of runners.

The Bismarck Capitals are moving on to Wednesday's 7 p.m. state qualifier after rolling 11-1 over the Dickinson Volunteers. The Volunteers will play in the 2 p.m. loser-out contest.

A Jack Trottier sac fly to right field with the bases loaded in the bottom of the third opened the scoring at 1-0 Capitals. Bismarck struck again with the bases loaded in a three-run fourth, receiving a two-run single to right off the bat of Jaden Mitzel to go up 4-0.

Dickinson got one back in the fifth with a Tyler White RBI single, but the Caps put the game out of reach in the fifth. A Kade Trottier RBI sac fly and a two-run, two-out triple to right by Keegan Glatt had Bismarck leading by six at 7-1.

The Jamestown Eagles and Williston were set to begin the final opening-round game at 7 p.m. Check back to www.jamestownsun.com for story and results. The tournament's full schedule can be found below.
