The only hiccup in Carter Klipfel's 3-for-5 Wednesday evening at Jamestown's Jack Brown Stadium wasn't really his fault.

The Bismarck Representatives' shortstop/catcher was gunned down at third base while trying to tag from second on a frozen rope thrown by Minot right fielder Eli Nissen in the sixth inning of state-qualifying action of the Senior Babe Ruth Class A West Region tournament.

The Reps were already leading by the final score of 11-6 before Nissen unleashed his highlight-reel throw from right. Bismarck will play either the Bismarck Capitals or the Jamestown Eagles at 7 p.m. on Thursday with the winner advancing to Friday's 7:30 p.m. championship game.

"I saw (Nissen) go foul and I was just trying to make him make a play," Klipfel explained. "I'm pretty fast on the bases."

The junior-to-be at Bismarck Legacy is also pretty solid at the plate.

Klipfel barreled up an Aiden Stewart pitch in the fifth inning and broke up a 6-6 game with a two-run single, his third single of the Reps' 14-hit attack.

"First pitch was a curveball and the second one was a fastball down the cannon and I just sat back and waited for it, that's about it," Klipfel said. "Give our pitchers some insurance."

The Reps needed it Wednesday, spotting the Metros a five-run top of the first. Bismarck clawed back with two runs in the first, a run in the third and three more in the fourth. Noah Riedinger (2-for-2) connected for a double and two RBIs, while Miles Stiefel (3-for-4) and Joe JaDuke each drove in two more.

Bismarck starter Lucas Schell wet 4 1/3 innings, being charged with all six Minot runs on seven hits. Stiefel earned the win in relief, tossing the final 2 2/3 and recording a pair of strikeouts with no hits allowed.

"I thought we did what we needed to do at the plate, we bunted the ball well and pitched well enough," said Reps coach Troy Olson. "I was really happy with the way Lucas gathered himself and found a way to compete, and Miles came in and threw really well for us."

Minot's Landyn Almy finished batting 1-for-3 with three RBIs. Jonas Bubach went 1-for-2 with a run driven in and pair of walks.

Jamestown was playing the Bismarck Capitals in Wednesday's final game at deadline. Story and results can be found at www.jamestownsun.com.

The Senior Babe Ruth Class A state tournament is scheduled to begin Aug. 4 in Valley City.

"It's nice to punch your ticket early," Olson said. "Hopefully we'll come out and continue to get better. As you go in a tournament the teams get better, and so we have to too."

"Just having fun, staying calm," Klipfel added. "Letting our pitchers do their work and keeping the sticks going."

The Mandan A's and the Dickinson Volunteers survived loser-out play Wednesday and have advanced to Thursday's state qualifiers. Mandan topped the Bismarck Senators 13-7, while Dickinson held on to a 4-3 victory over Williston.

Mandan worked eight walks on Bismarck starting pitcher Brock DeCoteau, four of which came in the second inning as the A's jumped out front 4-0 in the top half of the frame. Mandan put the game out of reach with a five-run fifth.

Mandan's Turner Locken earned the win on the mound after tossing the game's first three innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. DeCoteau shouldered the loss.

Locken, Brayden Bunnell and Seth Arenz led the winners at the dish, combining for five hits, eight RBIs and five runs scored. DeCoteau finished 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs.

Dickinson received just one hit -- a Hunter Deschamp single in the third -- in defeating the Oilers by a single run.

The Volunteers had built a 4-0 lead heading into the top of the seventh, prior to Williston's Tyler Tamez uncorking a bases-clearing double to center with one out to get the Oilers to within a run.

Dickinson, however, was able to record the final two outs with the tying and go-ahead runs at second and third.

Dickinson will play Minot in a state qualifier on Thursday at 2 p.m., while Mandan will play either Jamestown or the Bismarck Capitals at noon.
