Jamestown starting pitcher Connor Hoyt didn't need much insurance Thursday night at Jack Brown Stadium, but Max Anderson and Co. provided plenty anyway.

Anderson split the opposite field gap in left-center with a two-run double in the fifth against the Bismarck Reps, opening up a two-run game to 4-0 Jamestown and punctuating semifinal play of the Senior Babe Ruth Class A West Region tournament. The Eagles cruised 8-1 and will face either the Reps or the Bismarck Capitals tomorrow (Friday) at 7:30 p.m. in the championship game.

The Reps and the Caps take the field at 5 p.m.

"I got a ball that was a little low," Anderson said of his fifth-inning battle with Reps' starting pitcher Carter Klipfel. "All I was thinking is like, 'Two inches higher and I'm absolutely going to destroy it.'"

Anderson drove in three of Jamestown's eight runs, which included a first-inning sacrifice fly. His double was one of five smoked to the outfield by the Eagles, as Jamestown's offense produced more than enough punch to back up the southpaw Hoyt.

It took Hoyt just 71 pitches to get through the entire seven innings. He faced the minimum three batters in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh frames, dealing in front of a defense that turned a pair of double plays.

The Reps defeated Jamestown twice during the regular season, getting to Hoyt for eight runs on six hits and three walks in an 8-6 victory back on June 22.

"He's a throw to contact type of guy -- let our defense do the work -- and he's been doing that every time he goes out on the mound," said Jamestown coach Sam Joseph.

Hoyt, who doesn't have blazing stuff, allowed six hits and finished with one strikeout.

"He's like, 'This is what I've got. You think I throw slow? Well, hit this slower one,'" Joseph said. "There were two at-bats in a row where he threw, maybe, 40-45 (mph) and it didn't matter to him. He just has that much confidence."

Hoyt retired 12 of 13 batters from the second inning through the fifth before allowing a leadoff triple to Klipfel in the sixth. Klipfel would score on the play behind Jamestown's second of two errors. Eagles' third baseman Chris Erickson misfired a short throw to Anderson and first base to check if Klipfel had touched the bag, allowing the runner to scamper home.

Klipfel was ruled safe. The visiting pitcher shouldered the loss, tossing 4 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks.

"(Hoyt) threw very well. He pounded the zone," said Reps coach Troy Olson. "I think our hitting in plus counts today was flat out terrible. 2-0, 3-1, we had way too many pop-ups.

"But I credit their pitcher. He threw a heckuva game ... and their defense played very well today. They're a good team and we've got to play a lot better than that if we're going to compete with them."

Jamestown's Ty Monson (1-for-3) drove in a pair of runs, while Hoyt (2-for-3), Erickson (1-for-2), Mason Lunzman (2-for-4) and Nolan Nenow (1-3) also doubled in the game.

The Eagles, Reps, Caps and Minot have all advanced to next week's Class A state tournament beginning Tuesday in Valley City. Minot will be the fourth seed out of the West.

"I think it all starts on the mound for us," Olson said. "We have a lot of pitching depth and hopefully we'll be able to use it. It's kinda gravy what we do from here on, but you'd still like to at least uphold your seed or come out top two from the West."

The West Fargo Vets, Devils Lake and the Fargo Post 2 Bombers are in the running for this weekend's Class A East title being played at Fargo's Jack Williams Stadium.

"We just gotta keep doing what we're doing," Joseph said. "The goal is 1-0 every time. If we take care of business like we have been then we'll be just fine."
