Jimmie baseball was a two-out balk away from potentially being swept by Hastings College over the weekend to open conference play in Nebraska.

The Broncos took three of four against the University of Jamestown in Hastings after being ranked 11th out of 11 teams in the Great Plains Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll released last week. The Jimmies were picked second behind Concordia University, Nebraska, which earned nine first-place votes to UJ's two.

Jamestown dropped to 13-10 overall and 1-3 in the GPAC and will travel to Moorhead, Minnesota, on Tuesday to play Concordia College in a single nine-inning game beginning at 3 p.m.

Jamestown and Hastings played two games on Saturday and two on Sunday, with UJ's Chase Hacker doubling with two outs in the top of the eighth to set up the Jimmies' lone victory in game No. 1.

Tied at 3-3, Hastings pitcher Jackson Grote threw a wild pitch and committed a balk to bring Hacker around to score. UJ's Aaron Pugh took the mound and tossed a six-pitch bottom of the eighth to lock down the win.

Kendall Yackley started for the Jimmies and allowed just two earned runs through 4 2/3 innings with three strikeouts, while Andy Reed got the Jimmies through the later frames largely unscathed.

Lincoln Trujillo and Tayler Cullen drove in runs for the Jimmies in the first. Jamestown's Luke Shekeryk was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the seventh to bring home a run.

The Broncos walked-off the Jimmies 3-2 in game 2.

UJ senior reliever Austin Pesicka got two outs in the bottom of the seventh before giving up an RBI single to the Broncos' center fielder Ryder Ghidotti with runners on first and second to end the game.

The Jimmies' Kensaku Akiya started on the hill and made it through three frames before being lifted for Cameron Jenkins in the fourth. Akiya allowed two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three in 47 pitches.

Race Traynor tossed an 81-pitch complete game for the Broncos.

UJ right fielder Brian Rice doubled to open the game and later scored on a Dylan Dudley sacrifice fly to left. Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, the Jimmies tied the game with a Trujillo sac fly to right that scored shortstop Grant Okawa from third with nobody out.

Hastings' starter Josh Merithew had the Jimmies' number to begin Sunday, recording 11 strikeouts in a three-hit, 5-2 victory for the Broncos.

A Brice Foster RBI single in the fourth and a run-scoring Rice triple in the fifth accounted for all the Jimmies' runs. A three-run fifth for the Broncos turned the tide.

UJ reliever Reed was saddled with the loss after taking over for Payson Mills in the fifth.

A seven-run third by the Broncos in Sunday's series finale was all the offense the home team needed in nine innings.

The Jimmies loaded the bases in the ninth trailing by the final score of 10-5 before Dudley grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the game. UJ starter Foster was charged with three earned runs in Hastings' big third frame, as the Jimmie defense contributed three errors and the Broncos batted around.

Trailing 8-0, the Jimmies tried to chip away with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth and drove in two more in the eighth. Okawa and Cullen both tripled for the Jimmies in the eighth.

Jamestown was limited to 19 hits in 108 total at-bats (.176) and committed six errors over the four games.
