Five Dordt University errors resulted in four unearned runs for the University of Jamestown in game 1 on Saturday in Sioux Center, Iowa.
But Jamestown's offense didn't need the help at Dordt's Open Space Park.
UJ's Luke Shekeryk, Matt Meraz and Kendall Yackley all cracked home runs, and both Yackley (homer, triple) and Brian Rice (double) contributed three hits to the Jimmies' 10-hit attack in a convincing 12-3 victory for the Jimmies to open a Great Plains Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The Defenders (10-20, 3-9 GPAC), however, tagged the Jimmies for nine runs in game 2 and held on to split the series, 9-8.
Jamestown (21-12, 8-5) is scheduled to host Concordia College, Minnesota, on Monday in a single nine-inning game beginning at 1 p.m. at Jack Brown Stadium, before playing a four-game weekend series at home starting Saturday against Dakota Wesleyan University (10-13, 4-8).
Jamestown toppled the Cobbers -- Monday's opponent -- 7-3 on March 23 in Moorhead.
Jimmies 12, Defenders 4
A three-error first inning for Dordt resulted in two early runs for the Jimmies and UJ broke down the door with four more runs in the third.
Shekeryk crushed a two-run home run to center field and second baseman Brice Foster chased Dylan Dudley (double) and Meraz (walk) home with a two-run single. Jamestown led 6-1.
Yackley sailed a solo homer over the left-field fence in the fourth, ending starting pitcher Logan Horne's day for the Defenders.
UJ reliever Cameron Jenkins replaced Jamestown starter, Payson Mills, in the fourth to record the final out and stranded two runners with UJ leading 7-3. Jenkins struck out three over 2 2/3 innings and recorded the win.
Meraz's homer, another solo shot, came with two outs in the fifth, pushing UJ's lead to 8-3, and a Rice single was the only hit UJ produced in a three-run sixth. The Defenders were charged with a two-run error in the frame.
Yackley tripled and scored on a Rice single in the seventh, completing a 3-for-4 game for both hitters.
Defenders 9, Jimmies 8
Missed opportunities stung the Jimmies with 12 men left on base in the nine-inning game 2.
The Jimmies had the tying run on third base in the eighth when slugger Lincoln Trujillo looked at strike three for out No. 3. It was the only strikeout recorded by Dordt reliever Nick Yeager, who tossed the final 2 1/3 innings and was able to hang on to record the save.
Yeager allowed one hit and walked three but only surrendered one run after a three-run fifth by the home team put the Defenders out front 9-7.
Yackley took the mound to start game 2 for UJ, allowing six earned runs on seven hits and a walk in three innings pitched. A two-run Logan Cline home run in the first inning had the Defenders leading 2-0, but UJ answered with a four-run second, highlighted by run-scoring hits off the bats of Foster, Rice and Grant Okawa (double).
Dordt fired back with three runs in the bottom half and recovered from a UJ two-run third with one in the fourth and its three-run fifth. Foster cracked a two-run home run for the orange and black in the third, and sacrifice flies by Rice in the fifth and Foster in the eighth wasn't enough.
Andy Reed came into the game in the fourth and shouldered the loss, allowing two earned runs on a pair of hits in an inning of work. The Jimmies tossed eight pitchers in the game, as Dordt rang up 14 hits.
Foster finished batting 3-for-4 and drove in four runs. Dordt's Austin Pullar (1-for-4) and Cline (3-for-4) each homered and combined to produce six RBIs.
Dordt reliever Jadon VanderMolen was credited with the win, entering in the third and allowing one unearned run through three frames.
