Jamestown High School head boys basketball coach Jacoby Lloyd is hoping he's got a little 27-0 magic left for the Lions All-Star basketball series July 15-16.
As the coach of the 2019 state championship Blue Jays, Lloyd will be heading up the Class A roster for both games and he's taking a couple of hometown weapons with him for the ride. Mason Walters, the state's 2019 Mr. Basketball award recipient, and all-conference guard Jared Kallenbach will be traveling with their high school coach to play in the senior all-star contests.
Lloyd, a first-time head coach for the tournament, will be assisted by Bismarck Century's head coach Darin Mattern. Lloyd assisted under Mattern for eight seasons at Century until he made the move to Jamestown. It will be a different dynamic for the two coaches, but Lloyd said he is not worried about it.
The series begins Monday at Bismarck Legacy High School before heading to West Fargo on Tuesday. The boys' contest between Class A and Class B will tipoff at 8 p.m. both nights, following the girls' games at 6.
"I think it will be pretty comfortable for both of us," said Lloyd of having Mattern as an assistant. "I have known him for ... 15 years. Half my life.
"It will be interesting with the roles kind of reversed from me sitting on his bench as an assistant coach to him being an assistant coach, but it's more of a 50-50 thing than it is anything else."
It may be 50-50 between the two coaches for Class A, but it remains to be seen who will be the dominant force and take command on the floor.
"I know the Class B roster is very big and long," Lloyd said. "They've got some tall and athletic kids. They've got a lot of kids who are going on to play college basketball so it's going to be a challenge for us. We've got some kids going on to play some college basketball, too, but it's going to be interesting the first time we get into the gym for a practice to see what they do well."
In addition to Walters and Kallenbach, Class A reserved the 10 other roster spots for other area talents like West Fargo's Luke Lennon and Bismarck Century's Treyton Mattern. Mattern put up some impressive 2018-19 season stats for the Patriots averaging 23.8 points per game and coming away with 128 rebounds. Lloyd said the amount of talent on the Class A team is undeniable, but the difficulty he is facing is trying to get the team to mesh well on the court.
Ellendale's Austin Molan, who has committed to play at hometown Trinity Bible College next season, is on Class B's roster. LaMoure-Litchville-Marion's Jamison Kramer, a Bismarck State College men's basketball recruit, is listed as an alternate.
"As a coach in your own program, you get to know your guys and you get to know what they do well, and you always try to put them in a place to succeed," Lloyd said. "Trying to figure that out, within three days with an all-star team ... well..."
Lloyd said his initial thoughts are that the Class A roster will more than likely focus on the defensive side of the ball, as all the players on Class A's roster have played in high-speed offenses and know what to expect. Class A leads Class B 56-24 all-time in the series, but Lloyd said he thinks this year's games will be competitive both ways.
"It's an all-star game for a reason. They're all very talented basketball players so we're going to have to try to take some things away and live with other things," Lloyd said.
