Oberweiser named week’s best player

Kevin Oberweiser was named North Star Athletic Association men’s basketball player of the week after his career night Saturday in Bellevue, Neb.

The University of Jamestown junior guard scored a career-high 29 points on 11 of 17 from the field, helping the Jimmies come back from a 15-point deficit in an 88-85 victory over Bellevue. Oberweiser sank a career-best 7 of 10 from beyond the 3-point arc, which tied him for third on UJ’s list for 3-pointers made in a single game.

For the week, Oberweiser averaged 19.5 points, four rebounds and three assists in a pair of contests.

Loboes, Thunder trade rankings

LaMoure-Litchville-Marion and Medina-Pingree-Buchanan girls basketball traded the fourth and fifth positions in the latest Class B media rankings.

The Loboes (10-1) received five more points than the Thunder (7-2) to move ahead of M-P-B. Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier (10-0) is still ranked second after receiving five of 18 first-place votes, while Carrington (8-3) slid one spot from sixth to seventh.

Carrington boys basketball (6-2) is receiving votes in the boys poll. Minot Bishop Ryan, one of eight undefeated teams in the top 10, remains No. 1.

Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department has planned a pinochle tournament in conjunction with Cabin Fever Days.

The tournament is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Feb. 10 at Hillcrest Proshop. Two-person teams must sign up at the Parks and Rec. office (1002 2nd Ave SE). Limited number of tables.

Cost is $12 per person. Lunch and a beverage are included.

Coed softball tourney planned

Jamestown Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Cabin Fever Days coed softball tournament Feb. 3 at McElroy Softball Complex, weather permitting.

Cost is $75 per team. Teams are asked to register at the Parks and Rec. office (1002 2nd Ave SE) by Jan. 30.

A 16-inch softball will be used. Call John at 252-3982 for questions.

Volleyball skills clinic underway

University of Jamestown Jimmie volleyball has kicked off its Winter Skills Clinic for five consecutive Sundays at Harold Newman Arena.

Grades 5-8 will run from 2 to 3:30 p.m. each Sunday, with grades 9-12 following from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Cost is $60 and registration will take place at the door.
