Oakes' Garret Meehl has witnessed teammate Ashton Biesterfeld eat a lot off the basketball court.

The 6-foot-3 all-state tight end feasted at times Friday at the Jamestown Civic Center.

Biesterfeld's 18 points and 11 rebounds helped the Tornadoes keep alive a shot at winning the District 5 tournament title this season, as Oakes narrowly defeated Barnes County North, 51-50, in the opening round. Oakes will play top-seeded Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier in Saturday's semifinals at 6 p.m.

"I've seen him eat at least two large pizzas," said Meehl, who also quarterbacked the 8-2 playoff Torndoes' football team last fall alongside the player they call: Beast. "You just gotta step up in big games and, Beast, he especially stepped up tonight and played a big game."

Beast helped Oakes weather a 12-0 Barnes County North run that tied the game at 29-29 at the half. Biesterfeld had 12 points and nine boards over the opening 16 minutes, and his six points scored in the third were the only points tallied by the Tornadoes in the frame.

Behind a second scoring run -- this one 10-0 -- the Bison had carved out a 41-35 lead to begin the final period. Oakes' Dalton Schmit sat 6 minutes, 30 seconds in the third with four fouls, and the junior starter fouled out of the contest on the first possession of the fourth.

Meehl said the Tornadoes (13-7), who defeated the Bison (14-5) by 12 on Jan. 3, are currently battling the flu-bug.

"Pretty much everybody is battling sickness, but that's not an excuse," Meehl said. "You always gotta think you're going to get it done."

Meehl made the difference in the final frame, which BCN led until Oakes' Steele Hansen converted a pair of double-bonus shots at the foul line with 8.7 seconds remaining to produce the final score. Meehl converted 6 of 8 at the line and scored 12 of his 17 points over the final eight minutes.

A critical steal and score by Oakes' Alex Nelson in the final 30 seconds cut the BCN advantage to 48-46. BCN would go on to convert 2 of 4 bonus attempts, as Meehl would drive for two points and combine with Hansen to go 3 of 4 at the foul line to ice the game.

The Bison left five points at the charity stripe in the fourth (4 of 9). BCN was led by senior Colby Bruner's 18 points and 10 rebounds.

BCN moves on to play in a Region 3 qualifer at 4:30 p.m on Monday. Oakes fell 61-45 to Edgeley/Kulm/Montpelier (16-2) on Jan. 24 in Oakes.

"I think we gotta put the regular-season game behind us," Meehl said. "We lost not that close of a game to them, so I think we've got to put that one behind us and we'll be all right."
