Ellendale's Hunter Thorpe produced offense when it mattered Friday night at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The senior poured in 10 of his 15 points in the final quarter, converting 5 of 6 at the foul line, en route to a 58-51 victory over Carrington in the quarterfinals of the District 5 boys basketball tournament. Carrington had trimmed a 17-point, second-half deficit to just seven points over the final five minutes, but Thorpe provided the answers for the southern Cardinals late.

Ellendale moves on to Saturday's semifinals and will play LaMoure/Litchville Marion at 7:30 p.m. LLM defeated Midkota 46-25 in the final game of day 1.

"I had to make my own shot," said Thorpe. "They were face guarding me all night. I'm glad my teammates found me, and then we got to the line and that's what really helped us out in that fourth quarter."

Carrington (2-18) caught fire in the final frame, converting five 3-pointers and scoring 25 points. Freshman Hudson Topp nailed three 3-pointers for Carrington in the late comeback, but Thorpe hit a 3 of his own and Carrington was never able to get closer than seven down the stretch.

Ellendale carved out a 26-12 lead at the half after holding Carrington to 5 of 20 from the field. Carrington all-state senior Seth Nelson battled three fouls in the first half and had only produced two of his team-high 14 points after playing just nine minutes before the break.

Thorpe explained that it was part of Ellendale's plan.

"Basically get (Nelson) tired, get him in foul trouble, and we accomplished that tonight," Thorpe said. "He's good. He can jump, shoot 3s, get to the hole. He can do it all."

Ellendale's 6-foot-7 Scott Wagner put up his usual monster numbers: 19 points, 20 rebounds, 2 blocks. Ellendale will hope for more of the same Saturday against the defending district tournament champion Loboes.

Ellendale eked out a 47-45 win over LMM in Ellendale on Jan. 24.

"Keep feeding it to Scott. He's a beast down there," Thorpe said. "Keep looking for looks inside, kick-outs ... and we've got to fight pressure with pressure."

Corban Potts scored a game-high 14 points for the Loboes in Friday's 21-point win over the Mustangs. LLM forced Midkota into 22 turnovers and 9 of 28 from the field.
