Minot relief pitcher Calvin Baker intentionally walked the Bismarck Caps' Josh Lardy in the seventh inning Thursday at Jack Brown Stadium, loading the bases and miraculously getting out of a no-out jam.

Baker and the Metros weren't so lucky, however, in the eighth inning.

Lardy, the Capitals' cleanup hitter, slapped an outside fastball the opposite way to right field with the bases loaded, walking off the Metros 4-3 in extra innings of the Senior Babe Ruth Class A West Region tournament.

Both the Capitals and the Metros had already qualified for next week's state tournament in Valley City earlier in the day. Bismarck will play the Bismarck Reps on Friday at 5 p.m. with the winner advancing to tomorrow's 7:30 p.m. championship against Jamestown, while Minot will be the West's No. 4 seed beginning Tuesday at state.

Jamestown defeated the Reps 8-1 Thursday night to advance directly to the title game.

"Oh man, I wanted that one," Lardy said of his final at-bat. "I was so looking forward to that first at-bat (in the seventh), but obviously I wasn't able to and I was given another chance.

"Luckily, it worked out."

Minot pulled ahead 3-1 scoring a pair of runs in the fifth and benefitted from a 9-3 double play turned by right fielder Eli Nissen in the bottom half. Nissen put out Shea Huntington on a fly ball and tossed out the Caps' Josh Kolling leading off first base.

But Bismarck stormed back to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth. Kade Trottier belted a two-run single down the third-base line with the bases jacked to reset the scoreboard.

Bismarck's Jack Trottier preserved the tie in the seventh, gunning down Nissen at the plate from center field on a short single off the bat of Landyn Almy. After the Caps failed to score in the bottom half, Lardy got his second shot.

The 2020 Bismarck Shiloh graduate said the Caps plan to be focused Friday.

"I think we need to just be a lot better," Lardy said of the Caps' week in Jamestown. "Instead of keeping it rolling, we gotta start fresh and start a lot better. Both (Jamestown and the Reps) are really good and we're going to have to bring our best.

"We're not there yet, but I have faith in this team that we're going to get there."

Loser-out play

The Caps made two first-inning runs on Mandan starting pitcher Seth Arenz hold up in Thursday's loser-out play, winning 2-1 over the A's. The winning runs were produced by a Jack Trottier single and Mandan's lone error of the contest.

Peyton Eagleson earned the win for Bismarck, tossing seven innings of four-hit baseball. Arenz tried to help his cause in the fifth, pushing across Mandan's run with a single. The A's, however, would leave the bases loaded in the frame.

Arenz went the distance on the mound, allowing just a pair of hits and two walks. Bismarck's Josh Kolling shut the door for the Caps in the seventh to earn the save.

The Metros hung nine runs on the scoreboard in the first inning against Dickinson, ending the Volunteers' season with a 20-10 victory in five innings.

Minot's big opening frame was highlighted by a two-run triple off the bat of Tyler Budeau and a run-scoring double produced by Landon Halseth. Minot starter Lane Richard was chased off the hill after 16 pitches, as the Metros eventually sent 12 batters to the plate.

Budeau would finish 3-for-3 with a double, triple, a pair of runs driven in and four runs scored. Winning pitcher Tyler Johnson drove in four runs in Minot's 15-hit barrage.

Hunter Deschamp paced Minot, batting 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, a pair of walks, four RBIs and three runs scored.
