Blue Jays best Aberdeen behind three champs

The Jamestown High School gymnastics team left Aberdeen, S.D., on Thursday in a good mood after scoring a coach-pleasing 135.85 in its season opener.

"It's just fun sitting here thinking about all of our what-ifs," longtime coach Dave Tews said. "It's nice to look at our score and think that if all of our what-ifs fall into place, we could push 140 (soon)."

The Blue Jays out-pointed Aberdeen 135.85 to 126.60 thanks to first-place finishes from Hannah Schiele in the all-around and balance beam, and Erin Hillerud in the uneven parallel bars.

Schiele finished with a 34.75 in the all-around and a 9.15 on the beam. She was also second on the bars with an 8.25.

"We're excited, because she hasn't had a lot of time to get in the gym with volleyball," Tews said. "She had a good start."

Hillerud, a senior, won the bars with an 8.4, which was even more impressive considering she was docked for no dismount. Hillerud didn't land because of a knee she is rehabbing.

"That's a half-point deduction, and she still won it," Tews said. "That's a pretty darn good score if she has a dismount."

Senior Kailey Alber also impressed, coming in third with a 33.55 in the all-around. She was second on the balance beam (8.95) and vault (8.8) and fourth on the floor (8.55).

"Kailey's a hard-working senior," Tews said. "She really had a good meet."

Seventh-grader Rachel Schiele made a splash in her first varsity meet, taking fourth in the all-around (33.45). She was third on the beam (8.6) and bars (8.2), and sixth on the floor (8.25) and vault (8.4).

The Blue Jays are back in action Dec. 11 in Dickinson.
