The Jamestown High School boys golf team was pretty happy with how the St. Mary's Invitational ended.

The Blue Jays teed off for their third tournament in four days at Bismarck's Hawktree Golf Course on Monday. The team ended up fourth (364) out of the 10 competing teams. Bismarck Century won the team title with a 334 with Logan Schoepp of Century earning top honors. Schoepp finished with a 41-38--79.

The Blue Jays' next meet is slated for 10 a.m. on Friday at Dickinson's Heart River Golf Course.

"It was a really nice chance to get out and see what it is like early in the year," Carroll said of golfing the course. "We got to see what kind of shots we want to work on before we end up going there for WDA and for State so that will be really nice."

The last few days have also been nice in sharpening up the Jays' long and short game.

On Saturday the Blue Jays carded their best score of the season in Dunseith where they finished third with a 337. Jed Traux ended up tying for second place at the Turtle Mountain Invite with an eight-over-par 78. Truax has been the Jays' No. 1 golfer recently but due to an advanced placement test, Truax was unable to attend Monday's meet.

Easton Romsdal stepped up in Truax's absence.

JHS head coach Jason Carroll commended Monday's No. 1 golfer on his performance at Hawktree and his progression since the start of the season. Romsdal was the Jays' No. 4 golfer at Friday's invite at Souris Valley Golf Course but has shown steady improvement breaking 90 both on Saturday (86) and Monday (88).

"He's picking up things really nicely," Carroll said of Romsdal. "He's a good young golfer and he tends to hit it straight off the tee and his short game is pretty solid.

"He's starting to learn how to score in tournaments and today was really impressive because that's a really tough course. A lot of the tougher holes were into the wind today and that was a really good test for him. He performed quite well."

Brooks Carroll was another Blue Jay who accomplished his goal on the course. Brooks, a senior, finished second for the Jays' carding an 89 and was two strokes ahead of his brother, Shea Carroll, to end the round. Shea has beaten his twin brother the last four meets by at least one stroke.

"There's never a dull moment having brothers on the team -- it's pretty fun for me," Carroll said. "Shea normally comes out a little bit ahead of (Brooks) but Brooks' goal was to get under 90 today and he did that. They had two pretty good days going into the wind and I was pretty pleased with that outcome there."

Carroll said he was especially pleased considering the degree of difficulty Hawktree posed to the group of prep golfers.

"Hawktree is one of the tougher courses we play length-wise and today with the wind blowing it proved to be pretty difficult," Carroll said. "There was only one golfer that broke 80. That's pretty odd. Normally we have a handful or more who break 80 -- it proved what kind of a test that was."

Brad Burnham ended the round with a 96 while Camron Anderson shot a 105. Jordan Dodley wound up sixth with a 56-58--114.

"To see my guys come in fourth place with both Andrew (Walz) and Jed (Truax) missing the tournament, that was really nice to see," Carroll said. "We have some guys who are playing some pretty decent golf."
