Jamestown High School scored a tick above its season average Friday at the West Region gymnastics meet in Dickinson.

But the 141.575 turned in by the second-seeded Blue Jays was only good enough for third, as Bismarck snuck past Jamestown for second at 142.725. The Demons were averaging 140.395 heading into the regional.

"Overall we did OK, and Bismarck got another girl healthy here right at the end of the season," said Jamestown coach Dave Tews. "I personally think our scores were a little bit better than what we got. I thought some of our kids performed some of their better routines for the year, and an 8.5 or 8.6 coulda maybe been an 8.6 or 8.8."

The scores were noticeable down on vault. The Blue Jays scored a 35.325 in the event, with eighth-grader Haley Nelson's eighth-place 8.925 leading the way.

Powerhouse Dickinson ran away with the team title at 146.550-well over two full points off its season average. The Blue Jays entered regionals having rung up three straight scores over 142.5.

"We just couldn't buy a vault score today," Tews said. "Everyone did what they were supposed to, but some of our bigger scores that we needed to be there just weren't there today."

Jamestown's two seniors, Alexis Triebenbach and Hannah Schiele, both posted a solid evening. Schiele scored an eighth-place 35.275 in the all-around, while Triebenbach's 34.875 is a new career high.

"I'm really proud of our two seniors. We used all four of their scores tonight, both girls," Tews said. "Alexis has scored the best all-around of her career in two of the last three meets, and Hannah was named the West Region's senior athlete of the year."

Nelson placed fifth in the all-around (36.15), capturing fifth in the floor exercise (9.35). Blue Jay freshman Rachel Schiele tied for the fifth-best routine on bars (8.925).

"We scored a 141 and we didn't place a ton of kids, and with a score like that you probably should," Tews said. "There's just so many good kids in the West."

Jamestown High School hosts the state gymnastics meet beginning next Friday.

"It would be nice to see all the girls have their best day next week," Tews said. "We were just a little off in a few things today."
