Blue Jays Roundup: Hockey gets season-opening win

The Jamestown High School girls hockey team defeated Bottineau 8-1 on Nov. 27.

Alexis Kirkeby wasted no time getting her junior hockey season underway Saturday evening up in Bottineau.

The junior forward for the Jamestown High School hockey team came bolting out of the gates, scoring three goals in six minutes to put the Jays ahead 3-0 midway through the first period. Jamestown ended up defeating Bottineau 8-1 to open up the 2021-22 campaign.

Jamestown's first conference game is slated to come against Bismarck on Dec. 3. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. at the Blizzard's Capital Ice Complex - Wachter Rink.

With just over two minutes gone in the first period, Kirkeby made her way down the ice to net the puck behind Bottineau goalie Harleigh Parisien. Kirkeby turned around less than five minutes later to bury the puck to double the Jays' lead. The junior waited about 85 seconds after she scored her second goal to her last of the period.

Kirkeby scored her fourth and final goal late in the second period.

Parisien couldn't keep up with the Jays' shots on the net, only saving 15. First-year Blue Jay netminder Olivia Sorlie stopped all 51 of Bottineau's attempted shots.

Kirkeby's early scoring momentum bolstered the Jays' for the second-period stretch. Sophomore Peighton Walker got the assist off of Savannah Potratz to score her first goal of the season. Makenna Nold teamed up with defenseman Berdedette Belzer to net the Jays' sixth of the night. Belzer recorded the Jays' seventh goal -- the last of the second period -- taking the assist off of Liv Frohlich.

Neither team was able to do much in the third period until Brooklyn Bartsch put Bottineau on the board with a late third-period score.

Bottineau was called for just one penalty for two minutes while Jamestown ended up with two minors being assessed.

The Jays are one of five teams that have begun the season at 1-0. Williston, Fargo North/South, West Fargo United and Fargo Davies are all undefeated one game into the year.
