Blue Jays Roundup: JHS track and field competes in Mandan

The Jamestown High School track and field team raced at the Mandan MAR Meet Thursday night.

The Jamestown High School track and field team learned a lot watching their competition at the Starion Sports Complex in Mandan

"This was a huge meet, lots of kids competing," JHS co-head track and field coach Mike Dietz said. "It's good for our kids to see and to have that experience every once in a while. When you can see some of those athletes compete you pick up on some of the things they are doing and you want to start to emulate them."

Jamestown competed against all the West Region schools at the Mandan MAR Meet Thursday night. The boys' team ended up placing ninth out of the 10 competing teams with 23 points while the girls' team rounded out the top-four WDA teams with 63 points.

Some members of the Blue Jay squad did not compete Thursday but are slated to race today and Saturday at the Howard Wood Invitational in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

"We had PRs all over the track and in the jumps and in the throws," Dietz said. "It starts to warm up and you start to get some nice performances. It was really nice to see. We really like the mix of kids that we have this year. We have a lot of kids who want to work hard and put the time in to be excellent."

Thomas Allmer is one of those athletes.

Allmer, the Jays' main man in the throws, qualified to the state meet in the shot put where he threw a personal best of 48 feet, eight inches -- two inches farther than the state-qualifying distance. Allmer will now be competing in shot and discus at State.

While Allmer was shooting his shot, the Blue Jays had several athletes leaping to new heights and distances.

"We've got some good athletes in the with Devin Beach and Brode Hillstrom," Dietz said. "They are older kids who are good athletes and have some speed and they want to compete and they want to compete at the highest level all the time. Getting them over to where they want to be, just takes time physically. They are coming, they are good kids and they work hard."

Beach, a junior and Daniel Ulrich, a senior for the Jays, wound up seventh in the high-jump contest, both clearing the bar at 5 feet, six inches. Williams Durocher of Bismarck Century earned first-place honors and a spot at state with a jump of 6-02.

While Beach missed out on hitting the mark for State in high jump, he kicked his way to a state tourney berth in the triple jump, landing at 41-10. Hillstrom, a junior, did not hit any state tournament distances Thursday but has already qualified to State in long jump -- with a jump of 21-10 at last week's Karlgaard Invite in Bismarck.

While Dietz kept an eye on his field event crew, he also strayed to the track where Annie Nabwe put on yet another show.

The current Blue Jay school record holder in the girls' 100-meter dash sat out of her signature race Thursday but she still got plenty of sprints in. Nabwe, a junior, was the leadoff runner in both the 400 and 800-meter relays. The Blue Jays won the 4x200 meter race with a time of 1:48.56 and just barely missed Century in the 4x100. The Patriots broke the tape at 49.54 seconds while the Jays finished at 50.34.

The Jays have qualified to State in both relays and Dietz said that the Jays' 400-meter relay time is near the top in the state.

"We knew that if we put Annie on a relay that definitely improves your chances for qualifying to State when you have that kind of speed," Dietz said. "She ran really well in both relays (and) it was just something new for her to do and relays are fun."

Nabwe also rebroke her own school record in the shot put where she threw a 45-08. The junior also received top honors in the discus throwing a 126-00.

While many of the Blue Jays have already gotten to State, Dietz said the Jays aren't going to get lackadaisical headed into the last few meets of the year.

"This is a good time to get back to basics and then get them ramped back up in the next couple of weeks here," Dietz said. "The season might be close to over but it's not over yet so we still have time to improve."
