Blue Jays Roundup: Soccer draws again in Bismarck

The Jamestown High School track and field, boys golf, baseball and girls soccer teams were on the road this weekend

The Bismarck Century girls soccer team was looking for its second win of the season Friday night.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, they got their first tie instead.

The Jamestown High School girls soccer team recorded its third draw of the year-- tying Century 3-3 at the Bismarck Community Bowl. The Jays are now 3-2-3 on the year while the Patriots stand at 1-5-1. The Blue Jays will be back at the bowl on Thursday when they take on Bismarck High. The game is scheduled to kick off at 8 p.m.

The Blue Jays previously topped Century 2-0 at Jamestown's Rotary Field but playing on turf into the wind posed some different challenges to the Blue Jay squad.

"We struggled in the first half with the wind and Century's attack," JHS head coach Brandi Harty said. "We made some adjustments at half and the girls worked extremely hard to help generate a stronger attack which resulted in goals."

Haley Nelson closed out the first half with an unassisted banger to make it 3-1 Patriots at the break. Sara Sletto and Sophie McClean rallied late to tie it up and the Blue Jay defense managed to keep the Pats away from Leah Torres in the net.

The Blue Jays outshot Century 13-6 and Torres made three saves.

Baseball cleans up Watford City in five innings

Jackson Walters' dinger was just part of the story up in Watford City Friday evening.

The Jamestown High School baseball team swept the winless Wolves 13-2 and 16-3 to rack up the team's third and fourth wins of the season. The Jays now stand at 4-9 overall and 2-9 in the West Region.

"It was a combination of things," JHS head coach Jack Bowman said of the team's pair of wins. "We had good pitching and we hit the ball all right. I kind of challenged (Jakob Schempp) before the first game and just told him to try and keep his pitch count low and he threw a complete game."

Schempp, a junior, allowed just one earned run across his seven innings and posted 11 strikeouts. Bowman said while Schempp did give up Daniel Dufek's homerun, the Jays were steady enough to right the ship.

"We hit just enough and they committed a few errors on their side so we were able to get some runs up," Bowman said. "The second game, we did the same thing. We got 14 hits and our pitching was solid. We needed to have something positive happen and this was a good day for that."

Walters came up big in game No. 1 as he went 2-for-3 at the plate and recorded the Jays' first home run of the season. The sophomore also drove in three runs in the first. In the second game, Walters threw one inning in relief striking out two batters.

Bowman said protecting Walters -- and his other pitchers' arms will be crucial headed into next week. The Jays are slated for three doubleheaders, starting with Mandan on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at Jack Brown Stadium.

"We are going to have to manage our pitching into next because of all the games that we have," Bowman said. "We need to make sure that we have our fresh guys for our conference games and we're just going to have to play through our non-conference games. But it's good to get more games in -- more games means more experience and that's a good thing."

Walz back for golf on Friday

Andrew Walz got in some much-needed swings Friday at Heart River Golf Course.

Walz, a sophomore for the Jamestown High School boys golf team, carded a 46-46--92 in his first complete round for the Blue Jays to help the team to a 363-point, sixth-place finish.

Minot took the invitational with a team score of 325 while Trey Hohbein of Mandan earned individual medalist status with a 77.

While Walz has often been coined as the Jays' No. 1 golfer by head coach Jason Carroll, it was Jed Truax who drew up the Jays' best score of the day. Truax shot a 45-37--82, good enough for a 10th place individual finish.

No Blue Jay golfers landed in the triple-digits Friday.

The Jays will be in action again on Tuesday at Prairie West Golf Course in Mandan. The invite is slated to tee-off at 10 a.m.

Track and field dominates at Shiloh Christan

The Jamestown High School track and field team dominated the field Friday night at Shiloh Christian Middle School.

The Blue Jays' boys team earned 152.5 points, eclipsing second-place Southern McClean by 64.5 points. On the girls' side, the runners, jumpers and throwers helped lead the Jays to a 182 point finish. The Jays will be on the road again on Monday competing at Devils Lake.

Ben Anteau and Meghan Ford helped lead both Blue Jay 4x800 meter relay teams to top-finishes. The pair of seniors each anchored their respective relay team and used their speed to their advantage in their individual races. Anteau won the 800-meter run crossing the line at 2 minutes, 2.64 seconds while Ford won the two-mile race with a season record of 10:38.90.

Annie Nabwe's speed couldn't quite break the tape in the 100-meter dash.

Nabwe, a junior for the Jays, crossed the finish line at 12.8 seconds, 0.01 seconds behind her younger sister Yolanda. The Nabwe pair went 1-2 in the sprint. Yolanda also anchored the Jays' first-place 400-meter relay team.

Nabwe got 20 team points in the throws, nabbing first place in both the shot put and the discus. Thomas Allmer also finished first in the shot and discus.
