Carrington, Oakes book spots in Region 3 girls hoops tourney

The Cardinals forced 29 turnovers in the win.

JAMESTOWN — The Oakes Tornadoes and Ellendale Cardinals met with a trip to the Region 3 tournament on the line and for the seventh year in a row, the Tornadoes booked their spot in the Region tournament with a 60-34 win on Monday, Feb. 13, at the Jamestown Civic Center.

The Tornadoes (18-3) opened the game on a 23-6 run before the Cardinals (4-17) fought back to cut the deficit to 37-19 heading into the half. In the second half, the Tornadoes were able to stretch the lead out to the final of 60-34.

The Tornadoes were led by Laikyn Roney’s 21 points. The Cardinals were led by Christena Walker’s 10 points.

The Tornadoes are back in action at 3 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 20, when they take on Kidder County.

The Carrington Cardinals were the next team to book their spot in the region tournament thanks to a 49-23 win over Griggs-Midkota.

The Cardinals (16-5) outscored the Titans 20-2 in the first quarter and were able to stretch it out from there giving up less than 10 points in every quarter. The Cardinals were led by Haley Wolsky’s 18 points. The Titans (3-18) were led by Kaylee Johnson and Vanessa Vollmer with four points each.

The Cardinals return to the floor at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 20, when they take on Napoleon/Gackle-Streeter.
