JAMESTOWN — For the first time since the 2020-21 season, there are two local players on one of the two North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association’s All-State teams. Edgeley/Kulm-Montpelier’s Mataeya Mathern and Oakes’ Laikyn Roney were named to the All-State Second Team.
Mathern is the first Rebels player to be honored by NDAPSSA since Katie Entzi was named to the second team for the 2017-18 season. Roney is the first Tornadoes player to be honored by the organization since Sadie Hansen made it to the second team for the 2020-21 season.
Roney is the sixth player in Tornadoes history to make one of the All-State teams. Mathern is the third player in Rebels history to be honored and the ninth player from any of the schools to be honored by the organization.
This past season, Mathern and the Rebels finished in fifth at the state tournament, their second-highest-ever finish as a program. The Tornadoes' season ended with a loss in the first round of the Region 3 tournament.
In her senior season, Roney averaged 18.9 points per game on 41% from the field, 7.1 rebounds per game, 1.9 assists per game and 2.7 steals per game. In her junior season, Mathern averaged 18.1 points per game on 51% shooting, 8.5 rebounds per game, 74 total assists, 21 total blocks and 148 total steals.
