JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown held Central Christian College (KS.) to a hitting percentage of -2.1 in a sweep (25-14, 25-10, 25-18) on Saturday, Jan. 28, at Harold Newman Arena.
The Jimmies (2-0, 2-0) opened the first set in a battle against themselves as they were tied with the Tigers (0-2, 0-2) 6-6, with five of those Tigers' points being Jimmies errors. That trend would continue throughout the rest of the first set as the Jimmies won the set 25-14, while only giving up one kill and one ace.
The second set started in a similar fashion with the Jimmies having a 5-3 lead and the three Tigers points being Jimmies errors. But the Jimmies’ Jaden Gaalema got a kill to push his team’s lead out 6-3, starting a 4-2 run to push the Jimmies in front 10-5. The Jimmies followed that with a 6-0 run to take a 16-5 lead. The Jimmies ended the second set on a 3-0 run putting the set away on a Christopher Ross ace to make it 25-10.
Early in the third set the Tigers took their first lead of the match at 2-1 but the Jimmies quickly responded with a 9-4 run to take a 10-6 lead. Later in the set, the Tigers’ Elijah Kephart got a kill to cut his team’s deficit to 11-9, the Jimmies responded with a 9-0 run to put the match away at 20-9.
The Jimmies are back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, when they host Dordt University.
