UJ Roundup: Jimmies men's hockey can't keep up, wrestling struggle

FREMONT, Neb. — The No. 6-ranked University of Jamestown went 0-for-5 on the power play and it cost them in a 6-4 loss to Midland University on Saturday, Dec. 4, at Midland’s Sidner Ice Arena.

The Jimmies’ Reid Wilson opened the scoring at the 6:53 mark of the first period to make it 1-0. The Warriors responded with four straight to take a 4-1 lead with the last one coming at the 8:10 mark of the second period. The Jimmies’ Greg Susinski scored 40 seconds later to cut the deficit to 4-2 before the teams traded goals to head into the third period with the Warriors (3-11) up 5-3.

At the 10:48 mark of the third period, the Warriors’ Tommy Wardas scored to push his team’s lead out to 6-3. The Jimmies’(9-5, 7-1) Brad Fortin scored at the 15:19 mark of the third period to make it 6-4.

The Jimmies are back in action at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8, when they host Central Oklahoma.

UJ Wrestling struggles 

CRETE, NEB. — The University of Jamestown went to the Doane Open with 14 of their wrestlers and struggled, with only two top-six finishes on Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Haddix Recreation and Athletic Center.

The Jimmies' highest finisher was Eli Noonan who finished in fifth place in the 285-pound weight class. After flying through the first three matches, Noonan fell in the semifinals to Guillermo Duenas on a fall to send him to the consolation bracket. In the consolation semifinals, Noonan lost to William Penn’s Steven Martiezdelacotera via the fall to send him to the fifth-place match. In the fifth-place match, Noonan won thanks to a medical forfeit from Indian Hill Community College’s Joshua Gaye.

The Jimmies’ second-highest finisher was Aden Jorgensen who finished in sixth in the 197-pound weight class. Jorgensen started his day with two wins thanks to a major decision and a fall before suffering three consecutive losses to finish his day in sixth.

The Jimmies are back at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9, when they go to Midland University.
