Ford runs personal best
Jamestown runner Meghan Ford continued her tear at high school cross country courses on Tuesday, but this time it was in South Dakota.
The Class A top-ranked runner won the Aberdeen Invitational by 1 minute, 56 seconds over Aberdeen Central's Melanie Jacobs. Ford's time of 17:20.51 was a new personal best and moved her up to fifth in the country, according to Blue Jay coach Ken Gardner.
"It's early in the cross country season and runners haven't raced or posted their top times yet but it's still pretty impressive," Gardner said. "Overall it was another dominating performance by Meghan."
Gardner said he hasn't seen a Jamestown runner dominate this much since Sam Larson, who won state cross country titles in 2005-06 and six titles on the track.
The Blue Jay boys continued to show top-10 consistency with five runners taking the honor. Jacob Anteau (2nd) and Gavin Haut (3) finished neck and neck behind Aberdeen Central's Aaron Ryan. Overall, all seven Blue Jay runners finished in the top 16.
"They're running strong in their little groups and it's great to see," Gardner said. "The one that stepped up today was Zeb Willer, our junior captain, and he had a great race today.
"That's what we were looking for in our No. 5 racer," Gardner continued about Willer. "But we have some guys challenging for that spot."
The Jamestown boys finished six points behind Aberdeen Central, the team winner, while the girls finished in a tie for fourth.
The Blue Jays won't compete until Sept. 15 when they travel to the Devils Lake Invitational at Grahams Island State Park.
"Our guys are at the spot where we are hungry for a win," Gardner said. "That will be a big goal for them heading into the race."
