Meghan Ford commanded the Jamestown High School cross country team for five years.

After losing the Blue Jays lost the three-time state XC champ to graduation, head coach Ken Gardner was unsure of how his team would measure up at this season's cross country meets.

Now, nearing the end of the regular season, Gardner is pretty happy with the production he is getting out of the Jays squad.

"We are pretty young,' Gardner said. "Today all our top-five were ninth-graders and younger. I don't think that is holding them back. They are placing well. In a big meet like this, and to have no 12th, 11th or 10th graders scoring for us and to place like that -- it's pretty impressive for a group like that."

The Blue Jays hosted the R.M. Stoudt Cross Country Invite at Parkhurst Recreation Area Saturday. The Blue Jay girls' squad placed sixth out of the 28 competing teams with 216 team points, only nine points back of Bismarck Century. On the boys' side, the Blue Jays placed 10th with 340 points.

Jamestown will be back in action Oct. 2 at the Rugby Golf Club. The girls' race is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the boys' race to follow.

Brooklyn Nygaard once again led the Blue Jays in the individual placements running a 20:44 to place 15th out of 175 runners. Seventh-grader Layna Hoffer was just two seconds off Nygaard's pace, finishing in 17th with a time of 20:46.

"I think they are making some improvements no doubt," Gardner said. "We had a pretty big surprise with Layna. We started her in the JV but moved her up for our meet against Valley City and since then she's been running lights out.

"It's great to see those two, stepping up."

There isn't much of an age difference when looking at Gardner's girl squad compared to the boys' team.

Cullen Flieth, the Jays' lone senior, finished inside the top-20 Saturday, running the course in 17:40, good enough for a 16th place finish. Freshmen Caleb Fabian placed 51st with a time of 18:54 while Micah Stoudt cracked the 20-minute mark, by one second.

"We've just got to keep them working and keep them motivated," Gardner said.
