After a rough day on Friday, the Blue Jays bounced back to finish the state swimming and diving meet on a better note on Saturday in Grand Forks.

The divers again led the way, accounting for 42 of the team's 120 points led by Kaitlin Walsh's runner-up finish.

"The divers did really well," coach Marney Shirley said. "The final round probably wasn't as sharp as it has been, but we were very proud of them. Getting 42 points out of one event was awesome."

Walsh's 381.70 led the way. After a sub-par first dive on Friday, the senior standout rebounded with a typical performance the rest of the way.

"Her second dive (Friday) was her double and she nailed it," Shirley said. "It was a very fitting way to end her career. It's nice to see them rewarded for their hard work and nobody works harder than Kaitlin."

Abby Wanzek and Brooke Lukach -- who will both be back next year -- finished sixth and seventh, respectively, and were separated by less than three points. Wanzek posted a 356.45, while Lukach was right behind at 354.35.

Erin Hart and Miah Dabill were the only two JHS swimmers in individual finals on Saturday.

Hart struggled in the 200 IM for the second straight day, but bounced back with a strong performance in the 100 backstroke where she was fourth (1:02.22).

"Erin came back and did really well in the backstroke," Shirley said.

Dabill was eighth in the A final of the backstroke, and she had to earn it on Friday by winning a swim off.

"Miah swam an outstanding race in the swim off," Shirley said. "For her and Erin and all of our young girls, this is all a learning experience. Sometimes you build pressure on yourself or you feel pressure from outside factors. But you just have to focus in on how you're going to swim and put everything else aside.

"We'll learn from these experiences and hopefully apply them to the future."

Hart, Dabill and the Shafer sisters finished the meet strong, placing eighth to get on the awards stand in the 400 free relay in a season-best time of 3:55.36 in a meet highlighted by speed.

"It was probably one of the fastest state championships we've ever had," Shirley said. "The improvements from the seed times to the prelim round was phenomenal."

Bismarck Century won the team title with 290 points, snapping Minot's run of six straight state championships. The Majettes finished third behind the Patriots and Williston (262.5). Minot was DQed in the 400 free relay when star Dagny Knutson started early for her anchor leg.

It was a typically dominant meet otherwise for the state's greatest high school swimmer. Knutson won the 200 IM and 100 free, setting new national high school records in both. She finished her career with 16 state titles, 10 individual and six in relays. She plans to attend Auburn next season with her sights set on the 2012 Olympics in London.
