The outdoor track season isn't quite here yet, but the University of Jamestown already has one qualifier in the bag.

Connor Doppler, a junior from Anoka-Ramsey, Minn., earned a trip to outdoor nationals in Alabama in late May in the marathon by placing 19th out of over 1,900 runners at the 26.2-mile race in Phoenix, Ariz., on Saturday.

Doppler posted a time of 2 hours, 48 minutes and 16 seconds to qualify for the marathon for the second straight season.

"He wanted to do it and we went out and did it," UJ men's track and field coach Ed Crawford said. "To go out there and run the way he did was really a nice job by Connor. It's nice to get the first qualifier for nationals for the outdoor season."

Doppler qualified a month earlier than he did last season, leaving a good chunk of time to prepare for this year's marathon.

"The next month he'll take it kinda easy and take some time to recover, but then we'll have six weeks of good training and then taper down and hopefully it's not too humid in Alabama so he can have decent day to run," Crawford said.

The first scheduled outdoor meet for the Jimmie track and field teams is April 10-11 at the Northern State Invite in Aberdeen.
