Sport Shorts: Athletes of week, football polls

Optimist Club's weekly athletes

Kameron Selvig, Chandlar Rott, Paige Argent and Tate Olson were named Jamestown Optimist Club athletes of the week.

Selvig, a junior on the Blue Jay volleyball team, posted 80 assists, 12 kills, three blocks, six aces and 13 digs in three conference wins for the Blue Jays.

Rott, a sophomore on the Blue Jay boys cross country team, led the Jays to a first-place team finish at Grahams Island State Park, placing third in the 5,000-meter event in 17 minutes, 56 seconds.

Argent, a sophomore on the Jimmie women's golf team, placed third individually at the MSU-Billings Yellowjacket Invite in Billings, Mont. Her rounds of 78 and 70 led University of Jamestown to a third-place team finish.

Olson, a freshman on the Jimmie men's golf team, shot a three-round score of 214 at the Yellowjacket Invite, breaking the 54-hole record at University of Jamestown. The Jimmies placed second of five teams.

Cards still ranked No. 2

The Carrington Cardinals remain second in the state's Class A football media poll.

The Cardinals (4-0) received five of 17 first-place votes cast by members of the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters association. Carrington plays at Rugby (2-2) this Friday, Sept. 21.

New Rockford-Sheyenne (5-0) and Napoleon-Gackle-Streeter (5-0) are still positioned fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 9-man poll. NR-S is at Nelson County (1-4) on Friday, while N-G-S hosts Kidder County (3-2).

City fall volleyball leagues

Jamestown Parks and Recreation has announced teams are forming for a 10-week women's fall volleyball league ($250 per team) and a 15-week, three division co-ed volleyball league ($300 per team).

Registration forms are available at the Parks and Rec. office (1002 2nd Ave. SE) or online at Registration deadlines are Sept. 24 for women's league and Sept. 26 for co-ed league. Call John at 252-4320 for further information.
