SPORT SHORTS: Optimist weekly athletes, polls

Optimist Club's weekly athletes

Jordyn Mewes, Rachel Schiele, Lauren Sayler and Jordan Mann have been selected Jamestown Optimist Club athletes of the week.

Mewes, a sophomore on the Blue Jay girls swimming and diving team, won both the 200-yard freestyle and the 100 backstroke in state-qualifying time against Fargo North, and was also a member of the Jays' first-place 200 medley relay.

Schiele, a sophomore on the Blue Jay volleyball team, posted 34 digs and an ace in a pair of conference matches last week.

Sayler, a senior on the Jimmie women's soccer team from Bismarck, recorded back-to-back shutouts of Dordt College and 20th-ranked Midland University.

Mann, a junior quarterback for the Jimmies from Bismarck, completed 22 of 36 passing attempts for 234 yards and three touchdowns in the Jimmies' 35-28 overtime loss at Midland University. Mann also rushed for 44 yards and a score.

Carrington drops to fifth

Carrington slid from second to fifth in the latest Class A football media poll following last week's 18-14 loss to Langdon-Edmore-Munich.

Langdon-E-M stayed undefeated (6-0) and took over the second spot behind top-ranked Hillsboro-Central Valley (6-0). Carrington (5-1) is at Park River-F-L (2-4) on Friday, Oct. 5.

New Rockford-Sheyenne (7-0) and Napoleon-G-S (7-0) are both still in the 9-man rankings. NR-S hosts Cavalier (5-2) and N-G-S hosts Richland (6-1) this Friday.

The polls are voted on by members of the North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

Blue Jay soccer at WDA

Jamestown High School boys soccer (2-10-1) will play a state-tournament qualifying match against Mandan (5-7) this Saturday, Oct. 6, at the West Region tournament in Mandan.

The match is scheduled to begin at noon at Dakota Centennial Park.

Men's basketball league forming

Jamestown Parks and Recreation has announced teams are forming for men's basketball league.

Players and teams planning to participate are reminded that, in order to secure a spot in the league, registration fees must be paid in full and rosters turned into the Parks and Rec. office (1002 2nd Ave. SE) by Oct. 25. A late fee of $50 will be added to all rosters not turned in and not paid by the deadline.

The league fee is $600 per team and registration forms are available at the Parks and Rec. office or at Contact John at 252-4320 for questions.
