The Vikings are likely to be without two of their top receivers when they face Carolina on Sunday.

The Vikings on Saturday downgraded tight end Irv Smith Jr. from doubtful to out due to a groin injury and wide receiver Adam Thielen also is not expected to play in the game at U.S. Bank Stadium. Thielen remained Saturday on the COVID-19 reserve list after being placed on it last Monday.

In a pair of moves that were expected, Minnesota elevated long snapper Andrew DePaola and tight end Brandon Dillon from the practice squad to the active roster for Sunday’s game.

DePaola was elevated for last Sunday’s 31-28 lost to Dallas, and had seven clean long snaps, a day after being signed to the practice squad. Second-year man Austin Cutting was inactive for that game, and is expected to again be inactive against Carolina.

If DePaola looks good against the Panthers, Cutting could be waived. DePaola will use his second and final elevation Sunday, so he would need to be signed to the 53-man roster to play in another game.

Dillon, a second-year man, also was elevated for the second time this season. He was elevated to the active roster for a 19-13 win on Nov. 16 at Chicago when Smith also was out with a groin injury, but he played just two snaps in his second career NFL game. Smith returned to play against the Cowboys before aggravating his injury.

The Panthers on Saturday downgraded running back Christian McCaffrey from questionable to out. Carolina coach Matt Ruhle said Friday he did not expect McCaffrey to play.

Smith not fined

A source said Vikings safety Harrison Smith was not fined by the NFL for being flagged in the second quarter against the Cowboys for unnecessary roughness for allegedly making a helmet-to-helmet hit on wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Smith and Vikings coach Mike Zimmer both had questioned the call.

A source Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson was fined $4,159 for helmet-to-helmet hit on Minnesota quarterback Kirk Cousins in the first quarter that resulted in a lost fumble. No penalty was called on the play.
