Yelich top seed for Home Run Derby

Cleveland — Reigning National League MVP and major league home run leader Christian Yelich is the top seed for Monday night's Home Run Derby in Cleveland.

Yelich, who entered Thursday with 31 homers for the Milwaukee Brewers, will face hot-shot Toronto Blue Jays rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr. in the opening round. Guerrero has eight homers in 57 games since reaching the majors.

New York Mets rookie sensation Pete Alonso is seeded second and will face seventh-seeded Carlos Santana of the hometown Indians. Alonso has belted 28 homers, while Santana has smacked 19.

Third-seeded Josh Bell (26 homers) of the Pittsburgh Pirates will face sixth-seeded Ronald Acuna Jr. (20) of the Atlanta Braves, and fourth-seeded Alex Bregman (23) of the Houston Astros will square off against fifth-seeded Joc Pederson (20) of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The winner will receive $1 million, and the runner-up will earn $500,000. The other six participants will receive $150,000.

The player who hits the longest homer will get $100,000.
