Shooting personal bests wasn't exactly the goal for Blue Jay girls golf Friday in Dunseith.

Jamestown's Alyssa Zachrison and Kyra Vogel, however, didn't get the message, as each carded a round of 89 to open the high school fall sports season for the Blue Jays at the Turtle Mountain Invitational. It marked the first time Zachrison, a junior, and Vogel, a sophomore, broke 90 in tournament competition.

"I was definitely proud of those two breaking 90," Blue Jay coach Tracy Gustafson said. "You can tell now that they've been playing for awhile and some of those (veteran) characteristics are starting to show."

Gustafson said trusting shots and, for the most part, staying out of trouble helped the Blue Jays gain confidence throughout the day at the nine-hole Garden Gate Golf Course. Jamestown finished sixth of nine teams at 372. Zachrison and Vogel ended in a tie for 21st individually.

"Nerves never seemed to take over too much," Gustafson said. "They were making some smart club choices and just trusting shots in general, knowing they had different options available to hit."

Sophomores Lauryn Hibl (94) and Bria Nieswaag (101) notched the Jays' third- and fourth-best rounds, while junior Cora Wolsky was close behind at 106. Hibl ended her day scoring the second of two birdies.

Bismarck Century rolled to the team title (319) behind Leah Herbel's medalist round of 73 and Hannah Herbel's second-place 74.

"We had a pretty good start and we had options to choose from for our team score," Gustafson said. "To know we have a little bit of wiggle room there is nice. Overall I was happy."

The season continues Monday and Tuesday for the Jays hosting the East/West Classic at Jamestown Country Club.

"The Country Club is definitely a longer course than up here," Gustafson said. "But the girls are more familiar with it, so hopefully they'll have a little bit of confidence going into that as well."
