Rain and wind couldn't dampen the competition at the high school girls golf East-West Classic held at Hillcrest Golf Course on Tuesday, Aug. 13.
Bismarck Century's Hannah Herbel claimed medalist honors after a one-hole playoff against Fargo Shanley's Julia Wald. Herbel finished Tuesday's round with a 1-over-par 73 and said her key to success was consistent strokes that avoided Hillcrest's treeline.
"I felt like I chipped really well," Herbel said. "My drives were going pretty straight, so overall I was happy with the way I was playing. I am pretty glad that I didn't make many 3-putts today and overall my short game was pretty good."
Wald came away with second place and Minot's Becca Tschetter placed third, carding a 4-over 76 for the round. Century, led by Herbel's effort, edged Fargo Shanley by a single stroke -- 322 to 323 -- for top team honors. Williston, led by Kaleigh Carmichael's 77, posted a 332 to take third and help the West Region claim three of the top five spots.
Jamestown High School placed 10th out of 18 teams at 375. A solid improvement from the 391 the Blue Jays opened with during the Turtle Mountain Invitational at Dunseith's Garden Gate Golf Course on Aug. 9.
"I was impressed by their improvement," Gustafson said. "We shaved off 16 strokes from the last tournament so I was happy about that and they're becoming more aware of how many putts they take."
The Blue Jays' Kyra Vogel (90), Alyssa Zachrison (93), Bria Niewswaag (96) and Cora Wolsky (96) all turned in team scores, helping Jamestown place sixth out of the nine West Region teams competing. Gustafson said she saw improvements in club selection and the Jays' long game.
"Their club selection was good because there was some wind that came into play, so they did make some different choices," Gustafson said. "Sometimes it played out well, sometimes it was like, 'Oh, maybe that was still too long of a club.'
"But overall they are just becoming much more aware of those choices and how you can make those little adjustments throughout the round."
Gustafson said the Jays looked strong off the tee box and seemed most confident with iron and approach shots. With some things falling into place, Gustafson said there are still areas that need improvement.
"We're probably going to zone in on the short game," Gustafson said. "It's the chipping and putting where I feel like you can always continue to make improvements."
