Jamestown High School's state tournament drought in boys golf came to an end Tuesday in Dunseith.

The Blue Jays took advantage of some newly-installed tee boxes at Garden Gate Golf Club, rolling to their best team finish of the season at the West Region tournament. Jamestown placed third at 346, punching its ticket to the Class A state tournament for the first time since 2014.

Jamestown will begin state competition next Tuesday (June 4) at Bois De Sioux Golf Course in Wahpeton.

"The course played much longer than the last time we were there as they added tee boxes," said JHS coach John Samuelson, whose team shot a 330 in Dunseith on May 11 to place fourth at the Turtle Mountain Invite. "The added yardage was the cause of some elevated scores from other schools. I would say they (the Blue Jays) could have played better, but we played solid and that was enough."

Eighth grader Andrew Walz went low for JHS, finishing in a tie for ninth at 81 to earn all-conference honors. Hunter Mitchell (85), Bryan Mitchell (85) and Jed Truax (91) rounded out the team scores.

Jamestown placed fifth at state in 2014, which was held at Jamestown Country Club. The Jays' Austin Rene, a sophomore at the time, fired an even-par 72 to place third individually.

"They really bought into the course at Dunseith as being a course we can collectively play well at," Samuelson said. "Andrew and Hunter played solid all day. The rest of the boys really worked hard on recovering from mistakes all week. That proved to be beneficial today as the team kept recovering positively. I'm really proud of these guys."
