The Jamestown High School girls golf team had some trouble at the Dickinson Invite at Heart River Golf Course on Monday, Aug. 19.

The Blue Jays' team was led by senior Alyssa Zachrison (97) followed by Cora Wolsky at 103 and Bria Nieswaag (104). Grace LeFevre (137) and Isabel LeFevre (134) also appeared at Heart River competing in their first varsity tournament. The Jays carded a 438 to finish ninth in the nine-team West Region tourney.

"They ran into some hazard areas," JHS coach Tracy Gustafson said. "The greens were rolling somewhat tough, we had some trouble putting on certain holes where we had really intense breaks. Some of those are just unavoidable so we saw the numbers kind of pile up in those areas."

Gustafson said the Jays' putting and chipping are elements the team has been working on regularly in practice and added she hopes her team can improve its short game tomorrow (Aug. 20) at the Mandan Invite. Play begins at 10 a.m. at Mandan's Prairie West Golf Course.

"I think it's just one of those things we are going to continue to work on," Gustafson said. "It's just one of those really, really tough areas where you need to put a lot of time and practice and focus in."

The Jays will have plenty to focus on tomorrow, but Gustafson added she hopes her squad can enjoy the team's last tournament before the start of the school year this Thursday.

"I hope we can kind of take a step back and maybe relax and be excited about the day ... most of the girls have liked Prairie West in the past when they've played it," Gustafson said. "I would like to see, overall, just an increase in our positive attitude and really grinding it out to finish the day strong.

"I think we're really getting a handle of hitting off of the tee box well and then setting ourselves up for a good approach shot in ... so that's good."
