Steady improvement was the name of the 2019 Jamestown High School girls golf game.

JHS shot a 377 in the final round of the Class A girls golf tournament Tuesday in Wahpeton, improving upon its opening round by nine strokes. The Blue Jays turned in a team score of 763 to finish eighth.

"Lauryn (Hibl) improved a few strokes, Kyra (Vogel) improved a few strokes and then we just got to take a few less strokes in a couple of different areas," JHS coach Tracy Gustafson said. "I think overall we were setting shots up a little more on target than yesterday so I think that was in our favor. We were also just a little more comfortable around the course itself."

Bismarck Century topped the leaderboard at 661 and claimed its third state tournament title in seven years. Century's Hannah Herbel clinched her second state title with a pair of 78s. Williston's Carrie Carmichael (80-78-158) and Kaleigh Carmichael (79-80-159) placed second and third, respectively.

Vogel ended her season 25th and was the top finisher for the Jays. The junior recorded a 181, while Hibl closed out at 190. The Jays' senior captain, Alyssa Zachrison, ended her career at 191. Freshman Olivia Sorlie carded 203 and Bria Nieswaag recorded a 208.

"I drill a lot about keeping the mental toughness," Gustafson said. "I feel like we have made strides with that along the way. Everyone has done a fine job of working on making their own personal improvements with also keeping a team goal in mind."

The Blue Jays averaged a 388 team round on the season. While every 18 holes posed certain challenges to the team, Gustafson said she hopes her team realizes what they can do on the golf course.

"They're very capable of playing some great golf," Gustafson said. "They all have the fundamentals there and they have the skills there so I hope they just trust themselves to apply it. Sometimes you have to dig a little deeper to find that but they do all have the skill there."
