Blue Jay gymnasts bounce back

Jamestown High School didn't stew too long after posting its lowest gymnastics score of the season last Friday in Bismarck.

The Blue Jays struggled to a 135.625 at the Julie Ziegler Memorial, after having topped 140 three times in seven prior competitions. Jamestown was in much better form for Thursday's Starstruck Dual in Mandan, topping the Braves with a mark of 139.950.

"We were very happy with that score," said Jamestown gymnastics coach Dave Tews. "It was tough, tough judging today. If we would have performed this well in Jamestown, or east of here, we probably would have been back in that 140 to 141 range."

Jamestown swept the top six spots in the all-around, with the Schiele sisters leading the way. Freshman Rachel Schiele took top honors with a solid 35.5, while senior Hannah Schiele also topped 35 with a 35.05.

Rachel won vault (9.05), took second on bars (8.55) and the floor (9.25), and placed third on beam (8.7). Hannah won floor (9.3), took second on vault (9.0) and third on bars (8.25).

Senior Alexis Triebenbach had a solid dual for the Blue Jays, winning bars (8.55), placing second on beam (8.75) and capturing third in the floor routine (8.5). Triebenbach ended the evening third in all-around scoring (34.6), and was followed by Haley Nelson (34.3), Makenna O'Neal (33.4) and Kaelyn Nygaard (33.25).

Nelson was the night's beam champion (9.2).

"A couple of our top dogs had a bobble here and there. We talked that we still haven't put it all together yet," Tews said. "But we are happy with what we did today and bouncing back from our score from last week."

The Blue Jays are off until hosting Grand Forks, Wahpeton and Valley City for a meet at Jamestown Gymnastics Club on Jan. 27.
