Nelson, Schiele lead JHS over Mandan

Freshman Haley Nelson won three events for Jamestown High School gymnastics during the Starstruck Dual Thursday night at Mandan, and sophomore Rachel Schiele won the floor, as the Blue Jays defeated the Braves 133.875-120.925 at Starion Sports Complex.

"The scoring was a little on the low side and we had some junior varsity kids in," said Jamestown coach Dave Tews. "We would've been closer to 136 if we had some kids in the right spots. Overall, it went well and a lot of good things happened."

Nelson finished first in the all around with a 36.050, while Schiele was second with a 34.7. Nelson scored a 9.4 on the beam, followed by vault (8.9), and bars (8.85).

"She hit everything pretty well and did a nice job," Tews said. "She had other scores on beam of 9.6 and 9.5 already. If you get a 9.4 with this judge it's awesome, because the gal is a good beam judge. A 9.4 wasn't a given."

Schiele won the floor event with a 9.050, while finishing second in the vault (8.8), bars (8.6) and beam (8.25).

"She's been solid all year in the beam," Tews said. "Today she was a little off, but still solid. She didn't have her best day, but a 34.7 in all around is what we prayed for back in the day."

Jamestown hosts Grand Forks, Valley City and Wahpeton Jan. 26 at Jamestown Gymnastics Club.

"That will be a good one again," Tews said. "Grand Forks has been scoring a little higher than we are, so hopefully we close the gap before the state meet."
