Blue Jays take down Braves

Jamestown boys hockey is starting to find its stride after Christmas break.

After taking wins over both Bottineau-Rugby and Dickinson this past weekend, the Blue Jays kept plugging away Tuesday night in Mandan with an 8-3 victory over the Braves. The win gave Jamestown three more points in the West Region, currently tying it with Bismarck Century for the lead in conference points at 15.

Senior forward Devin Hofmann posted a hat trick and tallied five total points. Hofmann leads the Blue Jays in both goals scored (16) and points (24).

Tuesday's game, however, was tied at 3-3 early in the third before the Jays put it away with five straight goals to end the period.

"We didn't play very well in that first eight minutes of hockey, but over the final nine we played the way we normally play," Jamestown coach Matt Stockert said. "Give Mandan credit. They hung around like a bunch of ants.

"I had a little talk with the boys in the third and they put their nose to the grindstone and went after it hard at the end, which was nice to see."

Freshman Jace Thompson tallied twice for the Jays, who outshot the Braves 44-32. Jamestown senior goalie Matthew Schneider collected the 29 saves.

Leo Halko, Corey Nelson and Parker Stockert also lit the lamp for the visitors, who travel to Minot on Friday to face the Magicians (5-6-1). Jamestown fell to Minot 7-2 at Wilson Arena on Dec. 16, one night after dropping an 8-2 contest to Century.

"That was tough having to turn around and play a good hockey team like Minot the next day," Stockert said. "But I felt like in the second and third periods we actually outworked them, but just didn't have anything to show for it on the scoreboard.

"Hopefully the boys can muster up enough energy and enthusiasm to go up to Minot and take three more points in the region."
