True freshman Aidan Potas tallied in his first collegiate hockey game for the University of Jamestown on Friday night, but the Jimmies fell 5-3 to rival University of Mary in Jamestown's home opener at Wilson Arena.
"We didn't really have a good start. Obviously, we didn't get the outcome we wanted," Potas said. "We just gotta do better in practice, I think. It starts there."
A pair of UJ power-play goals, one scored by junior Tyler Chavez-Leech and a second by Potas had the Jimmies staked to a 3-1 lead with 17 minutes to play in the final period. The Marauders, however, rifled off four unanswered goals to improve to 3-0 on the young season.
UJ senior forward Destin Robinson tallied at even strength midway through the second frame, as Jamestown led 2-1 entering the final 20 minutes of play. Shots were nearly identical at 27-26 in favor of the Jimmies.
UJ senior goalie Tyson Brouwer made 21 saves. All five U-Mary goals were scored even strength.
"We fought hard, I just think they got some lucky bounces that didn't go our way," Potas said. "We'll be better."
Potas, a 5-foot-8, 180-pound product of Fargo Davies High School scored 27 goals for the Davies Eagles as senior forward last winter. UJ coach Dean Stork didn't waste any time working the true freshman in with the experienced crop of forwards the Jimmies were already returning to the ice.
"Yeah, it was fun," Potas said. "Big crowd, first game for sure. Great fans, we love them."
The Jimmies will have plenty of time to practice over the next two weeks prior to hosting Minot State on Oct. 3.
