DENVER -- It doesn’t count as a win.
The University of North Dakota and Denver tied 1-1 on Friday night, Nov. 15, in Magness Arena.
But considering UND’s recent history in the building, the fact that it tied the No. 2 Pioneers, then grabbed the extra point in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference standings on Colton Poolman’s three-on-three goal, there was good reason for the Fighting Hawks to be pleased with Friday’s outcome.
UND moved to 7-1-2 and showed, once again, it appears to be as good as any team in the country.
The Pioneers moved to 8-1-2.
UND, which had earned just one win in its last eight games in Magness Arena, piled along the boards after Poolman’s goal, which doesn’t count in the official statistics.
Jasper Weatherby scored on the power play, while sophomore goalie Adam Scheel stopped 30 shots -- the third-highest total of his career.
UND got on the board first, converting on its third power-play chance of the night. After winning an offensive zone faceoff, Jordan Kawaguchi got the puck at the right point. He fired a pass to the high slot, where Weatherby re-directed it over Denver goalie Magnus Chrona.
It marked the third-straight game with a power-play goal for Weatherby. The last time UND had a player tally three power-play goals in a row was Shane Gersich (four in a row) during the 2016-17 season.
But Denver answered in just 57 seconds.
Pioneer defenseman Slava Demin rushed the puck through the neutral zone and got it to the front of the net. UND goalie Adam Scheel made the save, but Denver’s Kohen Olischefski found the puck during a goal-mouth scramble and sent it underneath Scheel to tie it.
