Night No. 1 of the 2021 racing season went off without a hitch last Saturday at Jamestown Speedway.

Optimal weather brought in 114 cars -- including 35 Midwest modifieds -- and the track provided multiple-lane racing for the majority of the evening. Area winners included Lucas Rodin in the Midwest modifieds, Alex Kukowski in the legends, and Jonny Carter in the streets.

Coverage of last Saturday's racing can be read in Tuesday's E-edition of The Jamestown Sun or online at www.jamestownsun.com.

"We haven't had 35 (B-mods) for, I bet, two or three years on a normal night," said Jamestown Speedway co-owner Tim Baldwin. "That blew us away.

"Hopefully with the good track conditions and good racing they'll come back and we'll keep having that."

The track was going to be a topic with drought conditions affecting most of the area this spring. Baldwin said the speedway adjusted to the curveball by not over-watering and packing the racing surface rock solid, which resulted in the track holding together for the evening's six features, two consolation races, and 16 heats.

Fargo's Casey Arneson, the winner of Saturday's 25-lap IMCA modified feature, was happy with the conditions. He turned a lap under 16 seconds and built an 8.172-second lead over second place in a caution-free race that lasted less than seven minutes (6:55).

"That track was beautiful," Arneson said. "The track's been beautiful for the last couple years, really."

The A-mods did find passing a bit tricky, and the track took a little rubber by the end of 25 laps, but the WISSOTA streets and INEX legends appeared capable of driving anywhere.

Carter won a two-lane race in the streets from the fifth starting position, holding off Bob Banish Jr. who came to second all the way from eighth. Kukowski led the final eight laps of the 20-lap legends feature after starting way back in 12th in the 21-car field.

"I'll be honest, I was nervous leading up to it just with such dry conditions and everything, we didn't know for sure. But we were really pleased," Baldwin said. "We kinda erred on the side of not much water and just packing it extra hard and it worked out really good.

"We seemed to have gotten it right for the first night, which gives us a little bit of confidence with the rest of the year."

The grandstand also looked healthy on Saturday.

"The attendance was great," Baldwin said. "A part of it is I think just with COVID and so many things getting canceled, I think people are looking for things to do and the speedway's a good safe spot outside where you can be distanced."

Jamestown Speedway will do it all over again this Saturday with RC Car Night. Kids and adults can bring RC cars to race on the track at 6 p.m. prior to the races at 7.

All normal classes of cars are scheduled to race.

"This was a theme night that was popular last year," Baldwin said. "We're inviting anyone that's got an RC car to come out and we'll be setting up an obstacle course on the infield.

"Come out and drive your RC car around the race track before the races, and then stick around for the races and some chicken O's."
