Best to anyone's knowledge, head gymnastics coach Dave Tews has never missed a meet in his more than 35 years of coaching.

Tuesday night, the show went on without the JHS legend, who was out sick with the flu. His team did him proud in hosting the annual Christmas meet as the Blue Jays prevailed over Fargo Davies, Aberdeen and Fargo with a score of 137.3 points.

"We had a really great meet," JHS assistant coach Andrea Bitz said. "The kids always enjoy performing in front of the home crowd and it almost seemed like they tried extra hard to prove to Mr. Tews that they can do this."

Maggie Ridley and Alexis Triebenbach drew high marks from Bitz after strong overall outings. Ridley posted an all-around mark of 34.15, while Triebenbach finished at 34.05. Both were believed to be either PRs or close. They finished 2-3 in the all around.

"Maggie and Alexis really shined," Bitz said. "Alexis had a really great floor routine ... Maggie winning vault was great to see."

Ridley's 8.9 tied for the top mark on vault with Jenna Rieth of Fargo Davies. Triebenbach hit 9.0 on floor to come in second.

The Blue Jays' depth was again evident. The Schiele sisters-Hannah (33.75) and Rachel (33.5)-rounded out the top five.

"We're lucky to have six or seven good kids. We only take the top four scores for the team, but if any of the girls falter, we usually have other girls that kinda pick up the slack," Bitz said.

Erin Hillerud competed in just two events, but won one (bars) and was second (beam) in the other. She'll be back to full health competing in all four after the holiday break.

They'll also get Madison Mandan back from a concussion soon.

"We'll have a lot of time for practice over the break to upgrade and make improvements, but the girls have done well so far," Bitz said.

Up next for the Blue Jays is a home meet on Jan. 8.
