Jimmie volleyball sweeps Vikings

Bringing energy against down-the-road rival Valley City State University is rarely a problem for University of Jamestown women's volleyball. Tuesday night in Valley City was no different.

The Jimmies swept the Vikings 25-21, 25-19, 25-22 to get back into the win column with a big Great Plains Athletic Conference road trip looming this weekend.

"It was loud and it was obnoxious," said Jimmie volleyball coach Jon Hegerle of Tuesday's atmosphere in Valley. "Their team really plays well there behind a lot of momentum from that crowd, and they served really aggressively at us."

The Jimmie connection of the evening belonged to right-side hitter Isabel Wedell and freshman setter Jackie Meiklejohn. Wedell connected for 11 kills without making an error in 20 attempts (.550), while Meiklejohn produced 22 of the Jimmies' 39 assists.

"Izzy really hit the ball well, and Jackie setted her well," Hegerle said. "That's something we've been working on and it's starting to pick up. Kennedy Conzemius also did a nice job blocking."

Senior leadership was provided by outside Kori Buchanan and libero Julina Niemeier. Buchanan finished with 10 kills and only 1 attacking error in 19 attempts (.474), while a long serving run by Niemeier essentially locked up the Jimmies' 25-19 set 2 victory. Niemeier also ended with 22 digs.

"I thought as a team we performed well, but there were some things where if we can just keep our heads about us we can get better at," Hegerle said. "Those mental errors are really common in a young, inexperienced team and if we can clean those up we'll be able to gain a lot more momentum and be able to protect that momentum a lot better."

The win followed up Saturday's 3-0 loss to 15th-ranked Northwestern College at Newman Arena. The Jimmies return to conference play this weekend at 10th-ranked Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, on Friday and at College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Neb., on Saturday.

"We'll head down Thursday night, stay in Sioux City and get a study hall in on Friday," Hegerle said. "Dordt (10-2 overall) is big and they're very good. We're just going to have to claw and scratch and try to get under their skin."
