In Friday night's season-opening loss to Lakehead University, Jamestown College got behind big early and played uphill all night.

That was not a problem Saturday as the Jimmies picked up their first win of the season.

Jamestown College jumped out to a 15-1 lead and never looked back in an easy 70-39 win over Midland Lutheran (Neb.) at the Civic Center to finish their opening weekend with a split.

"For us, practice during the week is like homework," coach Jeff Trumbauer said, "the weekends are the test. Right now we're passing, but there's a lot of room for improvement."

It didn't take long to build the big early lead. John Peabody scored the first eight points for the Jimmies. C.J. Peeters and Bryon Jones followed with buckets to make it 12-1 before Hans Hoeg buried a three-pointer to make it 15-1 and the rout was on.

"We were strong to start both halves defensively," Trumbauer said. "I thought we got after them pretty good. We did kind of let up later in both halves and that's something that will be addressed."

Midland Lutheran, which lost at Valley City State on Friday in a much closer game (69-61), couldn't do much of anything offensively. Even when they got open looks, they missed. They scored just 16 points in the first half and made just 11 of their 53 shots in the game.

"They're a better team than what they showed tonight. They missed some shots that they normally make and that also covered up some of the defensive lapses we had."

Thirteen Jimmies played, 10 scored and four were in double figures. Jones had a team-high 14 points, while Hoeg added 13 on five of six shooting. Peabody and David Steege had 10 each and C.J. Peeters finished with nine points and nine rebounds.

Jason Ahrens had 20 of the Warriors' 39 points.

The Jimmies are back in action next weekend, hosting Northwestern (Iowa) Friday and Dordt Saturday.
