Jimmies handle Vikings

Valley City State is chasing the Jimmies in both the DAC and A.I.I.

The first match-up between the rivals went to the Vikings in Graichen Gym.

Friday the two met at the DAC Round Robin in Mayville and it was the Jimmies winning in 4, sealing the match 25-14 and 25-20 for a 3-1 win.

"They're right behind us in the A.I.I., so to beat a team like that only helps us," JC coach Jon Hegerle said.

They were much crisper than the first meeting, Sept. 21 in Valley City, which the Vikings pulled out in five sets.

"We didn't make nearly as many errors. We had a really strong defensive effort," Hegerle said.

The Jimmies had 77 digs. Star junior Katie Zent did a lot of everything. She led in digs (17), kills (15) and blocks (7).

They also got a nice lift from Janna Johnson, who got the starting nod on the outside, and pounded in 12 kills.

Heather Brown added nine kills and Hegerle highlighted her blocking, she had six. The coach also singled libero Katie Lee, "she ran down some tough balls and made a lot of positive plays." Lee had 14 digs.

Jada Meiklejohn had 18 assists and 17 digs for the Jimmies, who improved to 5-1 in the DAC and 15-8 overall. They play Mayville State and Dickinson State today.

"We need to come out and play every match with the type of effort we had today," Hegerle said.
