Former Jamestown College pitcher Alex Kreis was the winning pitcher as his minor league baseball team advanced to the championship round of the New York-Penn League Playoffs.

The Auburn (N.Y.) Doubledays defeated the Vermont Lake Monsters 7-2 to win the best-of-three series Friday night, 2-1.

Kreis pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. He walked two, struck out one and did not allow a hit. He was the second of five pitchers used by the Doubledays. It was the second win of the season for Kreis, who was drafted in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball draft in June by the Washington Nationals.

The Doubledays are the short-season Class A team of the Nationals.

Kreis, a Grand Forks native, was the DAC Pitcher of the Year the past two seasons for the Jimmies.
