Jacoby Lloyd thought he might have an all-state athlete on his 2020-21 Blue Jay basketball squad.

Wednesday night, the Jamestown head coach's suspicions were confirmed.

Carson Lamp, one of the 10 rostered Blue Jay seniors, was named to Class A's all-state second team for the first time in his basketball career. The North Dakota Associated Press Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association (NDAPSSA) formally announced the Class A boys all-state first and second teams Wednesday evening.

"I suspected there was a chance for him to be named to the all-state team but there are so many talented players in the state you never know with how voting can go," Lloyd said. "I was excited for him because he's put in a lot of time. He had a really good career for us at Jamestown High so I was excited that he was recognized for having as good of a season as he had."

Lamp, a 6-foot guard, threw up an average of 17.7 points per game eclipsing second-leading Blue Jay scorer, Brooks Carroll, by more than five points per contest. Lamp knocked down 44% from the field and was shooting 83% from the line en route to his 407 season points.

"My role on this team over the last three years has changed every year," Lamp said. "This year my role changed to more of a scoring role. I am very proud to receive all-state honors, and I worked very hard for it, but you can’t receive all-state honors by yourself. I also give credit to my teammates and coaches for making it possible."

Senior Shea Carroll led the Blue Jays and the West Region in total assists racking up 78 across his 19 games played. Keith Levin was big inside averaging 7.1 rebounds per game while Luke Van Berkom blocked 14 shots. Lamp commended Carroll's passing and the guys at the boards working to create extra possessions.

The senior also extended thanks to the Jamestown community for the support during his high school career and to his parents and the support they provided throughout his time in a Blue Jay uniform.

His time in the Blue Jay jersey was cut a little short of the senior's goals.

Lamp was forced to turn in his jersey when the Blue Jays lost to Mandan in the state-qualifying game missing the state tournament for the first time in four years. While the loss was a bitter pill to swallow, Lloyd said he was impressed with Lamp's push until the final buzzer signaled the end of the senior's Blue Jay career.

"Even though we lost two games in the WDA tournament we didn't give up, we didn't quit and I think that was kind of a testament to how Carson was as well," Lloyd said. "As a competitor, he suffered an injury but he never gave up, always wanted to be on the court.

"That's Carson in a nutshell -- an ultra-competitive kid who was always trying to figure out how he could get the basketball team to win games. He just had a knack for making big plays at the right time when our team needed him to make big shots. That's kind of what Carson thrived on was having a will or a drive to compete."

That drive could not be curbed even when Lamp suffered a knee injury up in Watford City on February 20. The injury certainly slowed the senior down as he only put up 11 points across the Jays' next couple of games but the single-digit point totals didn't last long. With his new knee brace in place, Lamp tallied a combined 31 points in the Blue Jays' last two games of the season -- once again putting him on top of the Jays' scoring charts.

"When I found out what was wrong with my knee I still decided to play because it was my last year as a Blue Jay and I wanted to help my team as much as possible," Lamp said.

Lamp said his knee doesn't cause him too much pain but will likely have to have surgery and rehab the injury over the summer in order to get ready for his inaugural collegiate season with the Concordia College basketball team. Lloyd said the Cobbers will be getting an athlete who has a deep knowledge of the game of basketball.

"They're getting a high IQ kid that is very competitive and highly skilled," Lloyd said. "He can be your primary point guard if you need him to be or he can play off the basketball and he's a really smart defender. What he might lack in a foot speed or a pure athletic ability, he makes up for with his mind."

The following five athletes were selected to the Class A boys all-state first team: West Fargo's Cater Birrenkott, West Fargo-Sheyenne's Jacksen Moni, Minot's Deonte Martinez, Nick Kupfer of Bismarck Legacy and Treyson Eaglestaff of Bismarck High.

Lamp did his job well his final season, aggressively guarding the three West Region first-team, all-staters and helping to lead the Blue Jays to a 16-7 overall record.

"As a sophomore on this team, I had a couple of great leaders along with the coaches that set the standard for how Blue Jay basketball should be," Lamp said. "I hope I have been the same kind of leader to the younger guys and that they keep playing Blue Jay basketball the way it should be played.

"The Blue Jay basketball program has done great things in the last couple of years and I'm very proud to be a part of it."
