Loan from mom paying off for Bismarck's Preston Martin

Not only has Preston Martin repaid mom, the owner of Lady J's Catering & Decor in Bismarck, for kickstarting his INEX legends career, but the 25-year-old also notched his first Jamestown Speedway victory during Sunday's annual Fireworks Spectacular.

Janice Martin's loan to her son nine years ago is producing hardware.

Not only has Preston Martin repaid mom, the owner of Lady J's Catering & Decor in Bismarck, for kickstarting his INEX legends career, but the 25-year-old also notched his first Jamestown Speedway victory during Sunday's annual Fireworks Spectacular, giving the Bismarck wheelman his second feature win of 2021.

"She gave me a loan that I had to pay back, but with my mom's help I started when I was a sophomore in high school," Martin said. "She's a big helper of ours."

Martin started the 20-lap legends feature on the pole and led from start to finish, holding off the likes of Drew Papke, Donavin Wiest, and Ryan Braseth over five total caution flags.

Papke drove to second from 10th but was sent to the back for initiating contact with Wiest and spinning in Turn 4 while battling in second with five laps remaining. Papke would exit the track and finish last.

Martin held off Wiest and Braseth over two more restarts down the stretch. Braseth slipped around Wiest on the outside for second.

Braseth came from eighth, while Wiest crossed third after starting seventh. The final caution was displayed with three laps remaining.

"We all got a pretty good restart, but coming into (Turn) 1 here, I just found some grip a little lane higher so I kinda drove around (Wiest)," Braseth said. "Going into (Turn) 3, I couldn't see him so I just went down."

The driver from Ulen, Minnesota, had nothing for the leader.

Braseth said: "Maybe one more lap I coulda been there?"

Martin also won on June 5 at Southwest Speedway in Dickinson.

"It's crazy exciting, you can't describe the feeling," Martin said. "I'm hoping I can keep it going."

Wishek's Brent Vetter led all but the first two laps to win Sunday's 15-lap bombers feature. Lisbon's Nate Reinke won a caution-less 20-lap WISSOTA Midwest modifieds feature from the pole, and Tripp Nelson won the slingshots feature.

Bob Banish Jr. and Crist Pittenger were also winners in the WISSOTA streets and IMCA mods, respectively.

Jamestown Speedway will host the opening night of the 32nd annual Dakota Classic Modified Tour next Saturday, July 10.
