Merchants top Elks in Fargo

The Jamestown Miller Lite Merchants topped the Jamestown Elks 12-8 in the first head-to-head meeting of the year between the two teams.

The game was played at Helling Field in Fargo.

Anthony Fontana had a big game for the Merchants, going 3 for 5 with 4 RBIs in the win. Sebastian Miles went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and Matt Watson also had two hits, scored twice and drove in one run. Bryan Erstad scored three runs for the Merchants, who scored five runs in the top of the eighth to push their 7-6 lead up to 12-6.

Ryan Williams worked the first five innings on the mound for the Merchants and left with a 5-3 lead. The Elks got to Isaac Triebold for three in the sixth. Triebold went the final four frames, allowing five runs -- two earned -- as the Merchants improved to 8-3 on the season.

The Merchants play in the Detroit Lakes Tournament this weekend, beginning Friday against Crookston at 6:30 p.m.
