The seasons keep changing and Jamestown's Johnny C. remains the same.

Of course John Corell Sr. was fast on Saturday night at Jamestown Speedway. Tree leaves turning color in the fall is about the only thing more predictable.

The 64 year old didn't win the IMCA modifieds season opener at his home track, but Corell did lead six of the 25 feature laps and was one of just two cars under 16 seconds in the 25-car field on Jamestown's high-banked, quarter-mile bullring.

Fargo's Casey Arneson overtook Corell with 12 laps remaining, sailing from eighth on the grid to win his first feature race of 2019. Corell finished second after starting third, surrendering the lead to Arneson two laps after the race's first of two caution flags.

Jamestown Speedway brought in 118 total cars on opening night.

"We'll work on it. I'm trying kind of a new setup in the car," said Corell. "(Friday) night in Mandan was the first night and it was pretty decent. We tweaked it a little bit tonight and I think it was a little bit better, so we'll tweak it some more."

Corell finished ninth of 26 A-mods at Mandan's Dacotah Speedway 24 hours earlier, after starting sixth. He won his heat Saturday on his home dirt, and was able to win a three-wide battle for the feature lead against Myles Tomlinson and Jarrett Carter by Lap 7.

Corell was strong close to the bottom, but Arneson was able to find just enough grip above Corell's line on the restart with 15 laps remaining.

"My car was a little snug on (Turn 2) and little free on (Turn 4), and I could hear somebody back there," Corell said. "You don't get a chance to look at the lap board to see who it might be, but that caution flag I seen, 'Yep, that's gotta be Casey.'"

Arneson won by over a second (1.245) and edged Corell in lap time, 15.904 to 15.986. Jamestown Josh Eberhardt also impressed, driving from 10th to third.

"It was fantastic," Arneson said in victory lane. "The car was about spot-on, I wouldn't change anything else, and the track was beautiful."

Jamestown's Don Gumke also made his much-anticipated return to Jamestown Speedway. The former ace finished the A-mod feature 11th after racing throughout the winter in Arizona, placing as high as fourth at Central Arizona Speedway in Casa Grande.

"It's awesome," Corell said on the return of his friend and rival. "I gotta go put a doughnut in his door."

-- Lisbon's Jonny Carter had the benefit of watching the track come to him during the 20-lap WISSOTA streets feature. Carter, who started third, was able to use the bottom of the racing surface to work his way past the front row of Royce Jawaski and Bob Banish Jr., en route to leading the final 13 laps and winning his first feature of the new season.

Jawaski placed second, with Banish-last year's track champion-placing third. Jawaski beat 26 cars to win the April 26 Mandan opener.

"I think Royce and them guys kinda wore the top out," Carter said. "That's the benefit of running third there for awhile. The car was good."

-- LaMoure's Brennon Weight survived a slider tossed in Turn 2 by Lance Schill with four laps to the checkered flag in the WISSOTA B-mods feature. Weight shot back underneath Schill and would lead every lap from the outside pole to cruise to victory. Schill finished second, while Lucas Rodin ran up to third from ninth after sustaining cosmetic damage in a Lap 1 wreck that sent defending track champion Nate Reinke to the rear of the 27-car field. Reinke battled back to finish eighth.

"The track was pretty good. (The) top really started fading at the end and I didn't know where to go," Weight said. "I just kept it up there, hoped for the best. It seemed like that race lasted a couple days, but that's all right."

-- Dylan Johnson, of Durbin, N.D., held off brother Sean Johnson and Austin Wiest to win the 20-lap INEX legends feature. The race included a violent three-car pileup on the frontstretch involving the lapped car of Rick Diede and top-five runners Kaitlyn Skalicky and Nate Keena, but everyone walked away. Donavian Wiest, the race's leader over the first nine laps, dropped out due to mechanical failure and handed the top spot over to Austin Wiest with 11 laps remaining. Austin Wiest held command for nine circuits, but Johnson and Johnson were able to run down the leader over the final half mile.

-- Ellendale's Dillon Thorpe led the only lap that matter in the 15-lap bombers feature: the final one. Thorpe used a strip of tack on the bottom of the track to pass both Erik Busche and Jarod Klein in the final set of turns over a green-white-checkered finish. Busche and Klein started on the front row and combined to lead each lap except the one paced by Thorpe.
