Greg Friestad and Randy Klein probably never would've imagined themselves promoters of any large racing event. But when fellow race car driver, father and friend Jeff Carpenter passed away unexpectedly the two took the lead in planning a fitting tribute.

On Saturday in Jamestown, the first of two memorial races were held in Carpenter's honor, with the second planned for Monday (May 27) at Sheyenne Speedway in Lisbon. Carpenter, 61, of Valley City, passed away May 13 while working on his No. 37 Midwest modified following opening night at Jamestown Speedway.

"We're probably the last two anybody would trust to do anything like this," Friestad smiled before Saturday's tribute commenced. "He probably thinks we're a bunch of idiots for doing this. But honestly, he's one of the most humble guys you'll ever meet. I know he's probably shedding a tear right now, just so thankful for everything."

Friestad and Klein, both originally from Valley City, had known Carpenter for basically their entire lives, and eventually they'd all become bonded by dirt tracks, roll cages and gasoline.

The idea to run a pair 37-lap B-mod features to honor Carpenter was quickly hatched, and with the help of numerous sponsors a purse of $1,037 would be awarded each night to the winning driver. Saturday's winner in Jamestown was Argusville's Reise Stenberg, who held off opening night's feature winner here: LaMoure's Brennon Weight.

"A guy can't even put it into words what's happened, the amount of support and the people that have stepped up," Friestad said. "Not only for these next two events, but also for the Carpenter family as well. It just really reminds you that there really is still good people in the world out there."

Klein was asked by members of the Carpenter family if he would pilot Jeff's No. 37 for the tribute, and Klein agreed. He darted from fifth to third in the first of four heat races, qualifying outright for the feature in a field that included—rather remarkably—37 total cars.

Klein drove to as high as sixth in the feature after starting ninth, before fading to an 11th-place finish at the end of 37 laps.

"It was good. We had a little extra horse from help from up above," said Klein afterward, as he was strapping himself into his IMCA Modified to also compete in the final race of the evening. "We gave it our all, and that's all you can say."

Stenberg started fifth and was able to navigate lapped traffic to get past Weight for the win in the closing circuits. The driver previously picked up a feature win in Grand Forks on May 17.

"This is more than what I expected," Stenberg said in victory lane. "I don't know what to say, this is awesome."

But the evening was, without a doubt, a more poignant experience for the family members of Jeff Carpenter in attendance, of which there were many. An evening made possible through the help and commitment of Friestad and Klein.

"For what they've done for everything ... It was awesome," said Chris Carpenter, Jeff's son. We're all here right now in support of the family and this is what dad would want to do. Fly high, 37."

-- Fargo's Casey Arneson started ninth and won the first night of the six-race Tri-City IMCA Modified Series, holding off Dylan Goplen and Dale Mathison. It was Arneson's second straight Jamestown victory, having one the May 11th opener. The Tri-City tour resumes June 28 in West Fargo and returns to Jamestown on June 29.

-- Lisbon's Jonny Carter also went back-to-back in the WISSOTA Streets, picking up his second Jamestown feature win in as many opportunities. Andrew Jochim, of Glyndon, Minn., won the INEX Legends feature over Jamestown's Billie Christ, who shot to second from fifth over 20 laps.

Jamestown's Billy Carow was the 15-lap bombers feature winner. Saturday's car count was 153.
