Nabwe comes up big for Blue Jay track at WDAs

Annie Nabwe came close to rewriting all the record books Friday at the Bismarck Community Bowl.

"Not only was she champion, she also set a new outdoor school record, she set a West Region Meet record, and also she now is on the state's all-time list with the fourth-best ever performance in shot put by a high school girl," Jamestown High School co-head track and field coach Ken Gardner said of Nabwe.

"That was a nice performance by her."

Nabwe, Jamestown High School junior, secured first-place finishes in the shot put, the 100-meter dash, and the discus, while also collecting second-place honors in the javelin. The 38-point performance helped the Blue Jay girls to a second-place finish in the West Region meet.

The Blue Jays racked up 100 points, while Bismarck Century took the meet with 176. The Blue Jay boys ended up tied with St. Mary's for eighth-place out of the nine competing teams.

A handful of JHS athletes -- Nabwe included -- are slated to finish up the season at the 2021 state track and field meet beginning Friday at 8:45 a.m. back at the Bismarck Community Bowl.

Nabwe has been breaking records ever since the first meet of the year, where she set a new indoor record in the shot put. Nabwe has since broken her record on four separate occasions.

Once the outdoor season began, Nabwe was a natural selection for the sprints. The powerhouse blew by Meghan Orr's 2016 record in the 100 and set the new standard at 12.52 seconds.

Nabwe was not safe from Nabwe though.

The junior has consistently shaved time off her signature race, but it got to a new level in Bismarck when she was only .04 seconds from landing in the 11-second range.

"In the 100-meter dash, she set a new school record," Gardner said. "Now she's the fifth-fastest girl in the state to ever run the 100-meter dash."

Nabwe's younger sister, Yolanda, was just 0.20 seconds behind her big sister, crossing the line in 12.24 -- good enough for a third-place finish.

The standout thrower and sprinter wasn't the only one setting new records and personal bests.

Ben Anteau broke a 37-year-old Blue Jays' record in the 3200-meter run. Anteau was crowned West Region champion finishing the eight laps in 9 minutes, 8.63 seconds -- shaving more than two seconds off Jeff Dick's time of 9:10.98 seconds.

Anteau was also part of the boys 3,200-meter relay team who finished fourth with a time of 8:16.59 -- nine seconds faster than any of its previous performances. Anteau along with teammates Chandlar Rott, Micah Hoke and Kade Schumacher had been gunning for a state-qualifying time during the Jays' last few meets.

"They started out the meet well for us," Gardner said. "They qualified not only by place but by time as well so that was a great start."

Meghan Ford also earned first place honors in the two-mile, finishing in 10:41.73 seconds and setting a new West Region Meet record. Ford's eight-lap performance came after a 4:57 one-mile run. The standout senior is the first girl this season to go under the five-minute mark in the 1,600.

Ford went on to be named the West Region Senior Athlete of the Year.

"I think we had a great day," Gardner said. "The kids were ready to compete and they left it all on the track."
